While Guillermo Del Toro didn’t actually direct new movie Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the marketing team surely seems to make you want to think otherwise. During a panel with actual Director André Øvredal at SDCC this weekend, the pair divulged more information about their upcoming film based on the books by Alvin Schwartz. “It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on…

Kevin Feige really knows how to keep a secret, doesn’t he? In surprising news at SDCC this Saturday, Kevin Feige has announced that Oscar winner Mahersha Ali (Green Book) has been cast as the new Blade. Even more surprising was the announcement that the character will officially be a part of the MCU, opening up the universe to a LOT more entities of the supernatural variety for Phase 4. However, the original Blade, released in 1998, was rated R for it’s over the top, graphic violence, which really doesn’t seem to gel with the current family-friendly nature of the MCU.…

Consider me as having been out of the loop on this one, but it’s been revealed today that fan favourite “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island” is getting a sequel this September, with “Scooby Doo” Return to Zombie Island”. In this new movie (and in true horror fashion), the mystery machine gang win a contest for an all expenses paid trip to a tropical island, not knowing they are returning to Zombie Island. Arriving on the new island they recognize the hotel as being the location of one of their old cases, and funnily enough, the zombies start to return. “Scooby-Doo on…

Oliver Jackson-Cohen is certainly having a good week. Fresh off the announcement that he has scored the lead in Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, comes news that he will also be the lead in Netflix and Mike Flanigans upcoming The Haunting of Bly Manor. The second season of the anthology series, that began with the surprise hit The Haunting of Hill House last year will feature a completely new set of characters, so don’t expect a return from Luke here. In the new series, Cohen will play Peter, who is described simply as a “charming fellow.” A complete 180 from…

Alexandre Aja’s Crawl hit theatres this weekend (to some surprisingly strong reviews), and follows a woman (Kaya Scoledario) trying to save her father during a category five hurricaine. The catch: Alligators have taken up residence in his crawl space…and they don’t seem too happy about her being there. It’s movie’s like this, with simple and effective premises, that have kept me enjoying the creature feature sub-genre for years now, and with this kind of movie hitting theatres more reguaarly since the success of Blake Lively’s The Shallows, I thought it would be a good time to throw some recommendations your…

It’s been a busy few weeks for horror lately, as we’ve had a new genre opening every week now since Child’s Play started us out on June, 21. A crowded marketplace has meant competition for horror fans has been tough, and we see this again this weekend, as another film seems to fail to meet its box office potential. Crawl, the new movie from Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) opens in third this weekend, and Paramount Pictures may be kicking themselves here for leaving money on the table. The film’s review embargo opened on Friday to reveal terrific reviews…

After making two excellent horror movies in the forms of Hereditary and Midsommar, everyone is looking to Ari Aster to see what he will dream up next. Unexpectedly, it might not actually be a horror movie, at least not right away. In an AMA session over on Reddit, somebody put the question to Aster on what his future movie plans were, and they got an interesting response; “Next one will either be a zonky nightmare comedy or a big, sickly domestic melodrama.” I can’t help but feel Midsommar, with its touches of humor, was already halfway there to a nightmare…

Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) returns to monster movie mayhem this weekend with his release of ‘Crawl’. In the new movie, Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) battles a hurricane, a tsunami, and some alligators that have taken up residency in her crawl space. Talk about a one-two-three punch! The movie is currently riding high with all fresh reviews on Rottentomatoes, but I’m sure that will change a little over the weekend. Still, the initial reviews are mostly positive suggesting an overall fresh score, similar to Aja’s own Pirahna 3D. Two new clips have been released from the…
