September is almost upon us and that means it’s time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. All summer London’s Science Museum has been running a special exhibition of props from across the series’ history. Now the museum is gearing up for a world record attempt that would make Spock proud…

To mark Star Trek Day, the venue will host the first ever Guinness World Records™ attempt for the ‘Most People Performing a Vulcan Salute Simultaneously’ at its popular Lates. The record attempt will take place during the museum’s free Star Trek Lates on the evening of Tuesday 8 September, when visitors can also enjoy a last chance to experience the Star Trek Warp Trail.

The Guinness World Record attempt will be the centrepiece of the Science Museum’s free, adults-only Star Trek Lates event. Visitors are encouraged to don their finest Starfleet uniform, find their crew and join the record attempt as part of a wider evening celebrating the science, ideas and imagination behind Star Trek.

The event forms part of the global digital ‘Star Trek Vulcan Salute’ celebration, connecting fans around the world through social media, livestreams and fan-generated content, marking 60 years to the day since Star Trek made its US television debut in 1966.

Dr Glyn Morgan, Head of Collections and Principal Curator at the Science Museum, said: ‘It feels very special to bring Star Trek fans together at the Science Museum for an official Guinness World Record attempt on Star Trek Day. For 60 years, Star Trek has connected bold storytelling with big questions about science, technology and what might be possible in the future, themes that sit at the heart of the Science Museum. After a popular Star Trek Lates earlier this year, we’re delighted to invite fans back for another evening exploring the ideas, imagination and real-world science behind the franchise, and a final opportunity to experience the Star Trek Warp Trail.’

The free Star Trek Warp Trail brings together objects from the Star Trek archives and historic items on display in the museum, exploring the lasting connection between the franchise’s visionary storytelling and real-world scientific innovation. The popular trail will close on Sunday 13 September.

Across the museum’s different galleries, visitors can encounter screen-used costumes and props including Admiral Jean-Luc Picard’s uniform, worn by Sir Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard; Scotty’s uniform, worn by Simon Pegg in Star Trek (2009); and an EV suit worn by Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery.

Back by popular demand for Star Trek Lates is the Bridge of the Enterprise experience, where visitors can step inside a 360-projection of the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise Bridge and pose for a photo in a replica of the Captain’s chair from Star Trek: Discovery.

Throughout the evening, visitors can enjoy a programme of talks, performances, music and activities inspired by the science and ideas behind Star Trek. The museum’s Explainers will lead a Starfleet-inspired journey through the Solar System in the Space gallery, while fans can also browse the award-winning Star Trek 60th anniversary range in the museum shop. Gaming gallery Power Up will be open during the evening with an additional ticket.
