It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news on the planned spin-offs to HBO’s Game of Thrones. We know that the prequel series, which filmed a pilot last year, has been axed. But what of the Targaryen-centric series?
NSFW site Recapped reports that HBO is currently looking for two female leads for the series which is being dubbed House of the Dragon.
Little is known about the setting of the film. Early reports explained that the series will jump 300 years in to the past to explore a more prosperous time for the Targaryen family.
The first of the roles currently being cast is is Rhaenyra Targaryen (late 20s), while the second is Alicent Hightower (“older”). Both of these characters have passing mentions in author George R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire series.
One of the most beautiful women in Westeros, Rhaenyra will attempt to usurp the Iron Throne from her brother Aegon II – presumably also to be cast – in the war known as the Dance of Dragons. Alicent is Rhaenyra’s step-mother, the two characters are embroiled in a bitter rivalry and struggle for power.
House of the Dragon has been conceived by series creator George R.R. Martin alongside writer/producer Ryan Condal. A ten-episode series is (currently) expected to air in HBO in 2022.
