GAME OF THRONES Movie Receives Working Title AEGON’S CONQUEST

Whispers of a Game of Thrones movie have been circulating for a short while, but this year’s CinemaCon finally added a bit of clarity. During Warner Bros.’ presentation on Tuesday, it was revealed that the new working title for the first-ever Game of Thrones theatrical film would be “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest”. While it is absolutely possible for working titles to change, especially with this movie being part of Warner’s 2027 and beyond slate, it does basically confirm that this film will indeed follow Aegon I Targaryen.

The film will be written by Bean Willimon, who served as a showrunner for Netflix’s House of Cards and a writer for Disney+’s Andor, and that is… pretty much all we know in regards to the cast and crew. Since it is very early on, that’s not a complete surprise.

So what does this mean? Well, if you know your A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire and Blood lore, then you may know quite a bit about Aegon. If not, we’ll try to summarise it as briefly as possible.

Aegon’s Conquest 2BC (before conquest) – 1 AC (after conquest)

Aegon I Targaryen was the first ruler of the Six Kingdoms (Dorne was independent until 187 AC- 187 years after Aegon’s Conquest). He was also the creator of the Iron Throne. Using the swords of his enemies, Aegon used dragonfire to weld them together to make the ultimate throne of power and authority. Along with his two wives (also sisters) Queen Visenya and Rhaenys, and the three dragons they possessed, Aegon subdued the realm after multiple battles that weakened the claims held by the various ruling lords.

Now, you’ve actually already met two of the Dragons- Vhagar and technically Balerion. Aemon Targaryen from House of the Dragon rides Vhagar, and we see Balerion’s skull in the Red Keep in King’s Landing. Balerion the Black Dread is actually the biggest recorded dragon in Westerosi history. He completely dwarves Drogon and is supposedly much, much larger than Vhagar. The final dragon is Meraxes who was ridden by Rhaenys. With their combined strength, the Targaryen’s become a force of nature that the Kingdoms are simply not prepared for.

The history of Westeros and the Targaryen bloodline is rich. The lore spans hundreds of years and emcompasses various lands, battles and families, so this is a very simplistic way of looking at Aegon’s Conquest. His conquest lasts for around 2 years, so it’s possible that this film could cover a majority of the highlights including the burning of Harrenhal. Having said that, it is also possible that this film could potentially play with some of the lore to create their own interpretation. Regardless of that, this film should include battles, lots of dragon fire and Targaryens being… well, Targaryens.

We’re very excited to see how this film develops, and we’re even more interested to see who they cast as Aegon. All will be reveled soon. While we wait, the third season of House of the Dragon will be hitting our screens this June so keep your eyes peeled for that, and as always you can catch up on all things Game of Thrones here.
