Back in March 2021 Black Clover’s anime run came to an end with its 170th episode. It left audiences suspended right at the edge of an impending battle. What began as a standard shonen journey about two ambitious orphans evolved over 170 episodes into a multi-kingdom war spanning reincarnated races, ancient demonic conspiracies, and apocalyptic rituals. Now in late 2026 and with the anime staging its long-awaited return to Crunchyroll, the sheer density of Yūki Tabata’s magical world warrants a thorough re-examination before the invasion begins.
Though I would 100% encourage you to watch the series, this can serve as a refresher course to those who did watch it prior.
The Pariah and the Prodigy

The journey began in the Clover Kingdom and focused on two young men, raised as church orphans in the forsaken realm of Hage, Asta and Yuno shared an identical, seemingly impossible ambition: to rise above their social status and become the Wizard King. Their paths diverged drastically during the grimoire acceptance ceremony. This is when young people come to age and take part in a special event where they are granted a grimoire and their magic style is assigned to them. Yuno was blessed with the legendary four-leaf clover grimoire once wielded by the First Wizard King, possessing immense natural talent with wind magic. Asta, completely absent of magical power in a world where magic is everything, received nothing at all and swiftly became a laughing stock to everybody else.
This all shifted however during an ambush by a rogue mage shortly after the ceremony. Pushed to the brink of death and fueled by raw willpower, an ominous, corroded five-leaf grimoire manifested before Asta. From its black pages emerged a massive, rusted iron blade imbued not with magic, but with pure Anti-Magic. The subsequent Magic Knights entrance exams cemented the rivalry between Asta and Yuno. Yuno naturally earned an immediate invitation to the kingdom’s most prestigious squad, the Golden Dawn. Asta, whose wild and unconventional power frightened most captains, was drafted into the ragtag, chaotic Black Bulls by their eccentric and destructive leader, Captain Yami Sukehiro.

The Reincarnation Conspiracy and the Shadow Palace
Early assignments across the kingdom soon uncovered a calculated insurgency led by the Eye of the Midnight Sun, a radical terrorist group fronted by a figure claiming to be Licht, leader of the ancient, extinct Elf tribe. Centuries prior, the elves had been systematically massacred by greedy human royals seeking to steal their immense magical reserves. Seeking total retribution against humanity, the extremist leader gathered magical stones to cast a forbidden reincarnation spell, intending to reclaim the land for his fallen people.

The conflict reached a boiling point when the terrorist leader assassinated the beloved Wizard King, Julius Novachrono, and triggered the reincarnation ritual across the entire realm. Scores of Magic Knights, including the majority of the Golden Dawn, were possessed by the vengeful souls of ancient elves. This gave us some incredible fights between what were once allies and gave some lesser focused characters a chance to shine and highlight how their magical abilities can be used to change the favour of battle.
The truth, however, proved far darker than simple historical grievance. Inside the otherworldly Shadow Palace, the battle revealed that the elves had never been betrayed by their ancient human allies; both races had been manipulated by Zagred, a high-ranking devil wielding Word Soul Magic who orchestrated the massacre to craft himself a physical vessel.

Through an uneasy battlefield alliance between surviving humans and horrified elves, Asta, Yuno, and Yami managed to shatter Zagred’s heart using Anti-Magic, the Spirit of Zephyr, and Dark Magic. While the kingdom was saved and Julius survived in an intensely mana-depleted child form using an ancient artifact, the political fallout was immediate. The corrupt Clover Parliament scrambled to find a scapegoat for the widespread destruction, putting Asta on trial for consorting with forbidden demonic forces.
The Dark Triad and the Qliphoth Threat

To clear Asta’s name and uncover the origins of this demonic plague, the Black Bulls spearheaded an investigation that pointed directly to the neighboring Spade Kingdom. A once-peaceful territory, Spade had fallen to a vicious military coup orchestrated by the Dark Triad: the sibling trio of Dante, Vanica, and Zenon Zogratis. Each sibling served as a host to an archdevil of the underworld, channeling terrifying fractions of true demonic power to enslave their populace and prepare an invasion of the surrounding nations.
The Black Bulls discovered the horrifying core of the Triad’s grand scheme: the opening of the Tree of Qliphoth. This ancient underworld channel would unleash seven distinct layers of demons into the living realm, an event that would bring about the extinction of humanity. Unleashing the Tree required an immense concentration of mana alongside two rare magical attributes: the Dark Magic of Captain Yami Sukehiro and the World Tree Magic of Golden Dawn Captain William Vangeance. Recognizing the existential threat, the Clover Kingdom formed a coalition with Queen Lolopechka of the Heart Kingdom, dedicating six grueling months to elemental and tactical training to prepare for war.
The Fall of Capitals and the Devil-Binding Ritual
That preparatory window ended in catastrophic failure. Before the coalition could initiate their pre-emptive strike, the Dark Triad launched simultaneous assaults across the continent. In the Clover Kingdom, Zenon effortlessly dismantled the Golden Dawn headquarters, slaughtering roughly half the squad and capturing William Vangeance, while Yuno survived only by the barest thread of William’s healing magic. Simultaneously, Dante attacked the Black Bulls hideout to secure Yami. Despite a grueling joint stand by Asta and Yami that saw Asta sacrifice his right arm to his devil for a temporary surge in power, they are able to briefly take down Dante but Zenon arrived as reinforcements, incapacitating the survivors and abducting Yami. In the Heart Kingdom, Vanica bested Lolopechka, detonated her own subordinates, and dragged the cursed queen back to Spade as a hostage.

Broken and leaderless, the Black Bulls were approached by Nacht Faust, their shadowy Vice-Captain who had spent years working deep undercover within the Spade Kingdom. Nacht, an experienced host to four lesser devils, offered to train Asta in the forbidden Devil-Binding Ritual so that the boy could master the entity dwelling within his five-leaf grimoire.
Rather than subjugating the devil by force as tradition demanded, Asta broke the cycle of domination. He learned that the devil, Liebe, was an outcast from the underworld who possessed no magic of his own, and was fostered by Licita—Asta’s own biological mother, who died protecting him from Lucifero. Bonding over their mutual grief, lack of magical power, and shared history, Asta offered Liebe an equal contract of friendship rather than enslavement.

The original anime run closed with Asta and Liebe forging their bond and beginning to master their Devil Union form, just as the allied Clover strike force assembled their assault team to storm the Spade Kingdom and prevent the gates of hell from opening.
The Next Chapter
When Season 2 kicks off, the series will jump straight into a desperate, multi-front offensive. The allied vanguard of Magic Knight captains and elite squad members must breach enemy territory and take down Dante, Vanica, and Zenon before the ritual drains Yami and William to open the underworld’s first gate.
The battles will no doubt be explosive if the previous series was anything to go on. As somebody who has read the manga I can tell you that this will be a phenomenal story to watch.
Be sure to check out the entire Black Clover series over on Crunchyroll.
