For decades, the One Piece movies followed a strict set of rules: high-octane, non-canonical spectacles featuring movie-exclusive villains designed only to celebrate the Straw Hats without interfering with the mangas main storyline. We had very close ‘what if’ events when the movies took on the FILM titles which used canonical characters in non canonical events but now that formula is officially changing with the twin announcements of ONE PIECE FILM GOD VALLEY in Summer 2027 and ONE PIECE FILM BAAD in 2029.
Both films serve as huge milestone pillars for the franchise’s upcoming 30th anniversaries. The 2027 film marks three decades since the manga began serialization in 1997, focusing entirely on the legendary God Valley Incident. That historic battle from 38 years prior to the main mangas events that brought together Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Garp, the World Nobles, and the infamous Rocks Pirates. The 2029 film aligns with the 30th anniversary of the anime broadcast. While its specific plot remains guarded, the title card—hand-drawn by Oda himself—shows a strange spelling for the word Bad.
Adapting canonical flashbacks as standalone features mirrors modern anime tropes that Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man have done successfully in which vital narrative arcs are given the big screen treatment. Giving the God Valley incident a big screen budget will 100% give that incredible event the love it deserves. Showing off top-tier figures like Rocks D. Xebec, a young Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom among so many others all battling it out in an event that should be experienced on the big screen.
Occurring 38 years prior to the current storyline in the West Blue, the God Valley Incident stands as one of the single most devastating clashes in pirate history. For decades, the World Government scrubbed every record of the island from official maps, treating the catastrophe as a forbidden secret. The event redefined the global power dynamics, gave birth to the legendary status of the Marines’ greatest hero, and shattered the most dangerous pirate crew ever assembled. All of these lead to the chaotic events the Straw Hats now face in the present day.
