Crunchyroll has announced the acquisition of North American and worldwide theatrical rights for The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure, the very first feature-length anime film in the hit anime. The global cinematic rollout will be handled in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, with specific release dates to be confirmed in due course.
The feature film adaptation features a brand-new, original mystery conceived directly by series creator Hyuganatsu. Norihiro Naganuma returns to the director’s chair, with animation handled by TOHO animation STUDIO. The movie announcement arrives right alongside the premiere of Season 3 on Crunchyroll earlier this month.
A Floating City and an Unsolved Secret
The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure takes Maomao and imperial official Jinshi far away from the secluded confines of the imperial court and into treacherous open waters.
The story kicks off when the Emperor issues Jinshi a solemn mandate: honour the final wish of a concubine who died five years ago by escorting her remains back to her ancestral home. However, upon inspecting the body, Jinshi makes a baffling discovery—her remains are entirely untouched by decay, preserved in pristine condition as if she were still breathing.
Determined to unravel the medical anomaly, Jinshi drafts Maomao to accompany him southward to Binan-shu, a coastal territory ruled by the Bi clan. While Maomao is thrilled at the prospect of examining regional flora and rare medicinal remedies, the bustling port metropolis is right on the edge of chaos. Local waters are overrun by vicious pirates searching for a fabled treasure hidden away by their deceased leader. When a major incident disrupts the late concubine’s funeral, Jinshi and Maomao find themselves caught in an unforeseen web of regional unrest, hidden relics, and lethal conspiracies.
Debuting on screens in October 2023, The Apothecary Diaries quickly established itself as a global anime phenomenon behind Maomao’s wry pragmatism, unhinged curiosity for poisons, and sharp forensic deduction. Season 2 arrived in January 2025, while Season 3 landed on Crunchyroll on 2 October 2026, making the entire episodic catalogue accessible to streaming audiences ahead of the theatrical expansion.
More information for The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure are expected from Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment in the near future.
