GODZILLA MINUS ZERO storms into UK cinemas this November – see the first Japanese film to be Filmed For IMAX from November 3rd 2026, with special screenings from November 5th and in cinemas across the UK and Ireland from November 6th.

    Minor spoilers ahead.

    Synopsis:

“War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”

    Review

Godzilla Minus One left a few doors peaked open with the reveal that Godzilla’s regenerative abilities were beyond our comprehension and a mysterious infection had latched onto Noriko, but there was definitely a part of me that didn’t really want a sequel. I think the same can be said for most films that receive a sequel, actually. However, after each trailer it became clear that there was a story to tell and after finally watching Godzilla Minus Zero… I am so glad that they did.

Minus Zero is an utter spectacle from start to finish. It is an incredibly bold and ambitious sequel that not only successfully introduces an additional kaiju, but also adds to the human story without pushing the monsters aside and without abandoning the heart that made Minus One truly soar. It is perfectly balanced and to an extent, even more emotional than its predecessor.

But let’s start with the stars of the show. The only major criticism I truly have is that Godzilla doesn’t have as much screen time as you’d expect. However, on the flip side of that the arrival of King Ghidorah takes precedence and becomes one of the central focal points which, as a huge Ghidorah fan, had me beaming ear-to-ear. The upgraded designs of both Ghidorah and Godzilla are immense. They carry this god-like presence that allows each of them to dominate each and every scene. You can feel their weight and actually appreciate the scale in a way that Hollywood’s MonsterVerse lost sight of.

The stakes have been heightened and the results are magnificent. The action and visuals are utterly jaw-dropping and adrenaline-inducing. Just the sheer amount of destruction elevates Ghidorah’s presence to this omnipotent menance. He’s cruel and playful and the movie really lingers on those notions. This interpretation of Ghidorah could be the worst one we’ve seen on the big screen. Not only did they nail his appearance, they also excelled in making him a malicious villain. Honestly, They are both truly terrifying in their own way and the level of care that went into designing and infusing these icons is beyond obvious. Whenever they’re on screen, they capture your attention within a single frame. You are drawn to their every move and detail. It’s just a thrilling experience to see these characters handled with the utmost respect

Every Godzilla and Kaiju fan knows what they want from these sorts of films and Minus Zero checks all of the boxes. From epic entrances to city-leveling carnage, Minus Zero feels more like a monster movie when compared to Minus One. Godzilla has always been a metaphor for the atomic conflict and Minus One embodied that on such a spiritual and personal level, whereas Minus Zero allows itself to embrace more conventional monster tropes whilst still tapping into those deep morality issues.

While the kaiju exist as behemoths of entertainment, they also serve another purpose. When it comes to the human element, an area that most fans typically dread, the existence of Godzilla and Ghidorah raises many fascinating and layered quandaries. It’s hard to fault the grounded post-war story in Minus One, but Minus Zero dances across multiple ethical lines and also revels in the beautiful nature of humanity. The contrast is executed brilliantly. You have these ideas of nuclear revenge, human weaponisation akin to the Kamikaze bombers and the prospect of human nature being above Mother Nature. Yet, despite the crushing weight of those dilemmas, the unification of friends, colleagues, lovers and strangers triumphs above the chaos. Japan is once again on the brink of utter ruin, but the hope never fades.

Even with their faults, the human characters are so easy to love because they’re imperfect. That’s what makes them work so well, and it’s their faults and inner turmoils that make them captivating- aside from their brilliant and gut-wrenching performances. Now, there was a slight concern over the growing cast, but the additional characters are absolutely wonderful. Of course, Koichi and Noriko are still very much at the heart of the film and their relationship has blossomed, Dr Noda steps up and actually plays a very significant role. He’s a lot of fun. There’s still that quirky vibe about him, but it sometimes acts as a mask, hiding years of regret and this internal struggle to protect Japan without risking his humanity and the lives who are quite literally at his disposal. However, my two stand-out characters are Akiko, the Shikishima’s adopted daughter, and Kanji Murakami, a biologist who has his own private agenda. Honestly, their performances were outstanding and so very different. Really, every single character stood out in their own unique way and they really debunk this myth that you can’t have a decent set of characters in a monster/sc-fi movie. It’s really a testiment to the cast and creators who not only acknowledged the importance of Godzilla, but also recognised that a meaningful story should not be sacrificed.

    Verdict

Godzilla Minus Zero is a cinematic triumph. With spectacular visuals, haunting themes that completely grip you and a soundtrack that elevates every single beat, this sequel will go down as one of the best Godzilla movies to date.
