King Spawn #29 is published by Image Comics, written by Todd McFarlane, illustrated by Javi Fernandez, coloured by Ivan Nunes and lettered by AndWorld Design.

Issue #29 is available 10th January 2024 either directly from Image Comics online or from your local comic book store, digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

Spawn’s journey through HELL is almost complete. The throne is in his sight, and only one thing stands in his way…

    Review

For this issue we join Spawn as he embarks on his journey to Hell’s Throne through the perilous terrain of Hell, from what at first seemed a straight forward short cut journey to get him ahead of the others it has now turned into a complete nightmare and it’s not just the terrain that’s causing the issues.

The path to Hell’s Throne is treacherous and designed not to be passed through by anyone this is evident as Spawn makes his way across the unforgiving land, the journey is a constant struggle and fight between the land itself that wants to devour those who dare pass and Spawn who is geared to fight back. But the terrain isn’t the only thing that is turning on Spawn, his very being is beginning to turn as his cloak and chains start to turn against their host causing Spawn to reach inside and find the power and energy to show them who is boss around these parts enabling him to reign them in… for now!!

Enemies can track Spawn his eyes are a give away to his presence making it easier for them to find him, Spawn realises the safest way to continue his journey and put those following off his scent is to take out the obvious red flag, his sight and continue his journey by using his other senses alone. Along the way there are different beings looking to test Spawn, some to help and some to harm but there is one being that is looking to help Spawn that could well turn out to be the most surprising of all.

The King Spawn story arc is probably the most hard hitting of all the Spawn stories currently in the multiverse, I know that Spawn in general isn’t a nursery rhyme so we come to expect a level of hard hitting story but this arc especially feels more gritty and has a rawness to it that kind of elevates the character to new levels. Todd McFarlane carries on with this epic cat and mouse chase for Hell’s Throne which pits some of the biggest and baddest characters within the Spawn multiverse creating a level of tension like no other, as the story arc is beginning to reach it’s dramatic climax it feels like although I need to know the outcome I kind of don’t want the series to end, you think you know what journey as a reader you are now on but then along comes another twist in the tail and you are now on a path you didn’t even know about, it’s and ingenious piece of writing.

The illustrations from Javi Fernandez are exemplary, with the artwork that highlights the raw emotions of the words written on each page. The dramatic colours from Ivan Nunes inject a passionate explosion in each panel providing some of the best visuals I have seen in comics right now, a true sight to behold and cherish.

    Verdict

Another creative masterpiece from the creators of this series with each issue blowing me further and further away each time. As the story arc reaches it’s conclusion we are still unaware who will succeed in reaching the Throne. The most exciting series I am reading right now.
