Something is Killing the Children isn’t just building to issue 50, it’s building a storm, and Issue 49 is where the sky turns dark. Issue 49 is heavy on the set-up for a milestone issue, issue 50. Everything across both the mainline series, Something is Killing the Children, and House of Slaughter has been intertwining and building towards this moment. It’s laying the groundwork and introducing dark political threads and ramifications, as the Order of St. George demands a report from both Erica and Jessica.
If you’re a fan of this series, buckle up, because everything is building to something bigger. That said, I found this issue a little on the lighter side. Not every chapter can land a gut-punch, and even on an off day, this series is still top tier. It’s all building to that milestone moment, and you have to bear with it as it does so. If you find that kind of slow-burn storytelling enjoyable, you’ll get plenty out of this one.
Which brings up the bigger question: what do Tynion and Dell’Edera have planned for issue 50 and beyond? It very much feels like we’re heading towards a core, milestone moment, one that will shift the franchise’s gears. Anything and everything is on the table.
Amid all that build-up, I continue to love Jess and Erica’s dynamic. The big sister/little sister energy is great, and they remain a huge draw. Seeing young Cecilia alongside the person we already know was a fun touch too. The issue ends with a jump to the future, so we’re back in business, but it also leaves questions hanging in the air. What happened to Jessica? Did they take Bex along for the ride?
Verdict
Something is Killing the Children #49 trades explosive payoff for patient groundwork, and that’s not a flaw; it’s the setup. Jess and Erica’s dynamic remains the emotional backbone, even as the political stakes rise around them. A quieter chapter with a loud purpose, this one’s all about what comes next.
