Review
The 50th issue of Something is Killing the Children isn’t an all-out bloodbath; it’s more of a subtle refocus of the franchise, one that’s equally as tense, gripping and pivotal. The issue brings the House of Slaughter storyline into the fold, with major plot points raised in that series finally paying off in the main title, and the repercussions are monumental.
After years of struggle, pain and suffering, we find Erica Slaughter down on her luck. Following the death of Jessica, Erica is a shell of herself, hiding or running from her responsibilities and duties as a hunter.
With the old dragon dead and new shifts in power underway, the future of the House of Slaughter has never been more uncertain. One thing is clear: the future looks darker and scarier for young kids like Erica and Bex without a Jessica, or a Big Gary, to guide them. Erica and Bex have to be the light in the tunnel. Bex is up for the challenge. Erica? Not so much.
I’ve been covering this series for quite some time, and to say this issue surprised me says a lot. The issue is more of a hum than a shout, which is surprising for a monumental issue like #50. But the questions it raises, the plot points it sets in motion, and the character development on display are delicious. It’s further proof that this series understands the long game. It’s laying the groundwork for the next 50 issues, and as a fan, reader and longtime enjoyer of this world, it’s great to see the well hasn’t run dry. If anything, more keeps flowing, in material, characters and plot alike.
Verdict
A monumental issue that cements this bold, twisty and delicious series as one of the best comics of all time. Issue #50 proves that Something is Killing the Children is truly legendary. This is a series that isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and the creatives behind the wheel know exactly where they’re taking it.
