Beneath the household names like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street lies a whole subculture of slashers made with grab-a-camera enthusiasm and zero concessions to good taste. From rough and gritty backyard productions to enduring cult favorites and international gems, Slasher Trash celebrates the insane storytelling, masked killers, and outrageous gore that prevailed in the late 1970s and 1980s, unbound by the formulas of the franchise films. The documentary shines a light on the countless movies, madmen (and madwomen) lurking beyond the mainstream of the genre, the filmmakers and actors who created them, and the controversies they sparked.
Slasher Trash is packed with 30+ interviews—from directors of the genre’s classics (Maniac’s William Lustig, My Bloody Valentine’s George Mihalka, Prom Night’s Paul Lynch) to cult-favorite actresses (Caroline Munro, Brinke Stevens, Lauren-Marie Taylor) to current stars of the horror scene (Terrifier’s David Howard Thornton, best-selling author Grady Hendrix, Clown in a Cornfield writer Adam Cesare). Through commentary from these icons and experts in the field, along with countless clips of the movies’ shocking highlights, Slasher Trash introduces viewers to cult favorites, hidden gems, and niche obscurities they’ve never heard of. At more than four hours, it will leave anyone who watches with a long list of psycho-shockers to track down on video, on streaming, and at retro screenings.
With early backer viewings drawing a resoundingly positive response, Slasher Trash is shaping up to be a must-have for slasher fans old and new.
Slasher Trash was written and directed by legendary horror journalist, former Fangoria editor and Rondo Award-winning documentarian Michael Gingold, who has spent more than three decades chronicling the genre and championing its deepest cuts. The documentary was made in partnership with Gareth Morgan, creator of Slasher Trash, the Facebook community of 200,000 followers devoted to the infamous slasher subgenre.
Every backer’s name also goes into the credits, making this slasher compendium a truly memorable piece for any horror collection, and the campaign is packed with exclusive merch that collectors won’t want to miss.
