Review
Thanks to the work of John Gore, Silver Salt Restoration, and Warner Bros., the Hammer classic, Dracula, has new life! Beautifully restored in glorious 4K. But this is far more than a restoration of the film many have known. John Gore has brought the film director Terence Fisher intended to the world.
When Dracula released in 1958, the UK’s BBFC censored some of the film’s more gruesome and spicy aspects. While censorship in the US and parts of Europe were less strict, the movie suffered cuts to the gore and seductive parts of the film. This is where the Japanese Version comes in. In Japan, audiences saw the film (nearly) in full. At the time, producer Tony Hinds claimed Japan received an extended cut; however, that isn’t quite true. Japanese censors, it seems, were less prudish. Therefore, for that market, the film had fewer cut. However, this cut created the misconception of a special Japanese cut.
But now, for the first time, you can experience Terence Fisher’s Dracula in all its bloody greatness! Relive the powerhouse performances of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as the two face off in this thrilling classic of man vs monster as it was meant to be seen. The blood is more vivid, the frights are more terrifying, and the erotic subtext is a lot less subtle.
Hammer fans are in for a treat, and so are horror fans worldwide. It’s not every day a sixty-eight-year-old classic is assembled as intended. This is a real gem for cinephiles.
Now, with The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula fully restored in 4K, it is exciting to see what John Gore and the team at Hammer and Silver Salt Restoration turn their attention to next. With Gore at the helm, the drive to restore and preserve the Hammer collection and bring the catalogue up to modern standards is a noble endeavour for film preservation.
Verdict
Hammer’s Dracula 4K is an absolute triumph. Fully restored and uncut for the first time in the movie’s history, this is a must-have for horror fans.
