Deadpool screenplay nominated for Writers’ Guild Award

Deadpool screenplay nominated for Writers’ Guild Award

Having proven itself a smash hit with fans and critics upon its release in February 2016, Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds and the franchise have not been forgotten even nearly a year on.

With a sequel already in the works – with a tentative release date in 2018 – and even whispers of a Wolverine/Deadpool crossover, public interest is still very much alive.

The latest headline from the morbid mercenary though, is a nomination from the Writers’ Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, written by Rhette Reese and Paul Wernick.

Deadpool was no stranger to awards in 2016 following its release, being nominated for 33 in total including MTV Movie and Critics’ Choice Awards. Ryan Reynolds bagged a Best Actor in a Comedy award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, as well as 2 MTV Movie Awards in Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight (and a Teen Choice Award for ‘Best Hissy Fit’)

Having been one of the most critically acclaimed R-rated movies of all time, (claiming the title of Highest Grossing R-rated Movie of all time) Deadpool may have its eyes set on a bigger prize.

Ryan Reynolds tweeted a hilarious letter subtly aimed at the coveted Oscar nominations, opening by saying “Apologies in advance for this simple letter. I was informed by 20th Century Fox that I’m not allowed to present you with freshly pitted greek olives, locally purchased deli meats and low-grade Canadian elk jerky.’’

With the 89th Oscars taking place on February 26, 2017, the multi award-winning Marvel blockbuster may achieve another world first; to be the first superhero movie to score the Academy Award.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ teaser trailer misfire

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

After viewing the teaser trailer for ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars story’ and viewing the movie upon release, some eagle-eyed fans had questions relating to discrepancies between what was promised in the trailer, and what was delivered on the big screen.

In response to this, Director Gareth Edwards addressed some issues with refining shots and scenes, saying, ‘’There was a bit of a process to refining the third act in terms of the specific shots and moments, and so certain things just fell away. But then what happens is marketing love those shots, and go, ‘oh, we’ve got to use that.’ And you say, ‘Well, it’s not in the movie.’ And they say, ‘It’s okay, it’s what marketing does, we just use the best of whatever you’ve done.’ And so there’s lots of little things, but towards the end you go, ‘I know that’s not in the film, but the spirit of it’s in the film.’’

Fans of the movies are notoriously perceptive and one, Vashi Nedomansky, spotted no less than 46 differences between the trailer scenes and the finished product.

‘Rogue One’ editors also weighed in, in an interview with Yahoo! UK, John Gilroy and Colin Goudie explained the thinking behind the re-shoots. “The story was re-conceptualized to some degree, there were scenes that were added at the beginning and fleshed out. We wanted to make more of the other characters, like Cassian [Andor]’s character, and Bodhi [Rook]’s character,” Gilroy explained. “The scene with Cassian’s introduction with the spy, Bodhi traipsing through Jedha on his way to see Saw, these are things that were added. Also Jyn [Erso], how we set her up and her escape from the transporter, that was all done to set up the story better.”

Unfortunately, there is no way to see the film entirely with the ‘missing’ scenes. ‘’There’s no mythical four hour cut, it doesn’t exist.’’ Said Goudie when asked about an extended edition.

Released on December 14, 2016, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ was an overall success, grossing over 700 million USD, and garnering praise from the critics. It is the 8th movie in the ‘Star Wars’ story arc so far, with events taking place between Episode III, ‘Revenge of the Sith’  and Episode IV, ‘A New Hope.’

New posters for ‘LEGO Batman Movie’ released

Warner Bros. have unleashed a fresh batch of dark justice with a new crop of graffiti style posters for the upcoming ‘LEGO Batman Movie’, due for release in February 2017.

The new images include headshots of Batman with a look of steely determination, a fresh-faced Robin, Alfred and Batgirl, as well as classic Batman villains such as Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Joker, Riddler and more. Each poster is vibrant and expressive, suggesting strong characters and personalities in the upcoming movie. Check out the gallery HERE.

The 2017 animated movie focuses on Batman’s struggles as he takes on a plethora of nefarious villains from his past, all the time learning to work with a new partner; the recently adopted Robin.

There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker’s hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Cast for the leading roles are Will Arnett (‘The LEGO Movie’) as Batman, Michael Cera (‘Superbad’) as Robin, with Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter) and Zach Galafianakis ‘The Hangover’ as The Joker.

Directed by Chris McKay, with writers including Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna, The LEGO Batman Movie will be only the second feature length LEGO film to have been produced so far, following on from the successful 2014 box office hit. With a further 2 movies confirmed for release in 2017 and 2019, and ‘The Billion Brick Race’ awaiting a release date.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ is scheduled to be released on February 10, 2017

Power Rangers

First look – Zordon and Alpha 5 reveal in ‘Power Rangers’ Movie

Power Rangers
First look – Bryan Cranston as Zordon

In the past week fans of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers were treated to the first confirmed reveal of two iconic ‘Power Rangers’ characters; Zordon and Alpha 5.

Unlike most ‘first looks,’ both of these reveals come directly from Virtual Reality footage from the ‘Power Rangers’ movie simulator, which premiered at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.

CES 2017 in Las Vegas treated attendees to a VR experience, in which we see the first images of Alpha 5 (portayed by Bill Hader in the upcoming movie) walking and talking with the Power Rangers. With a quirky walk and charming personality, Alpha is looking like the lovable sidekick to the squad we’ve come to know over the years. The video can be seen HERE.

Excited fans also got their first virtual reality glimpse of Bryan Cranston’s Zordon; mentor and commander of the Power Rangers, with a photo of a fan’s VR experience. While not crystal clear, there is no doubt that we are looking at the 4th iteration of Zordon of Eltar, inside the Power Rangers Command Centre. Appearing as a large head on the Command Centre wall and with the trademark blue hue, Zordon is instantly recognisable.

Lionsgate’s Power Rangerswill pit five seemingly ordinary teenagers from Angel Grove, California against the evil Rita Repulsa. Directed by Dean Israelite, the movie has been slated as a reboot and re-imagining of the franchise, Power Rangers is the third movie set in the Power Rangers universe.

Starring Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy, Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini and Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, fans of the original 1993 series Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers are hoping for a return to form for the franchise on March 24, 2017.

Margot Robbie to star in ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off

Despite the mixed reviews, ‘Suicide Squad’ seems to have enjoyed a successful box office result; securing nearly $315 million from a $175 million production.

The movie’s most memorable character by far has turned out to be none other than Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn; a good result considering it is the first big-screen outing for The Joker’s muse.

Under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, Robbie has been confirmed to star in a ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off movie focusing one one of the best known (yet least exposed) supervillains in the DC universe.

Despite being touted by some as a ‘Harley Quinn spin-off,’ the movie has hinted at featuring many other female heroes and villains, as yet unconfirmed.

Rumours include appearances from classic Batman supervillains such as Poison Ivy and even the possibility of Batgirl, a move highly anticipated by Bat-fans.

Working as both star and Executive Producer of the movie, Margot Robbie will be leading the DCU into an era of more female-led superhero movies, following in the steps of ‘Wonder Woman,’ expected to release in June 2017.

Very few details are currently known about the spin-off, however the deal signed with Warner Bros. is expected to gross over $700 million directly from Harley Quinn’s character, making it a no-brainer for the production company behind recent blockbusters such as ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘The Conjuring 2.’

With the spotlight having been shed recently on a lack of focus on female leads in superhero movies, the ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off will be a move from the DCU welcomed by many.

Ghost Rider premiers in ‘Agents of S.H.I.EL.D.’ Season 4

Ghost Rider Agents of Shield
Ghost Rider Agents of Shield

Robbie Reyes’ ‘Ghost Rider’ has been unveiled as an antagonist in the upcoming ‘Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ Season 4.

Appearing atop the first promo poster for Season 4, the unmistakable flaming skull of Ghost Rider bears down on the agents indicating an explosive re-entry into the Marvel universe.

Depicted by Gabriel Luna, Robbie Reyes will premier alongside Agent Coulson, Quake, and other prominent members of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the season’s first episode.

Alongside the Season 4 premiere poster, fans have been treated to an ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ film trailer with Robbie Reyes, although not in full ‘Ghost Rider’ mode.

The 15 second trailer gives us a glimpse of Ghost Rider’s (semi) flaming Dodge Charger, tearing down the streets and what appears to be some no-good villains chained to a dungeon wall.

While we’re yet to see Robbie Reyes in full flame as the demonic skeleton in this incarnation, what we can see is that the action packed TV series is not afraid to draw more and more well-known icons into its sphere.

Not much else is known about the Spirit of Vengeance in this series as yet, however the series trailer suggests he may appear as much more than a cameo role.

Ending on the strapline ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Ghost Rider,’ we can expect that Reyes will provide much more than just a one-episode cameo, and possibly play an ongoing part in the season 4 storyline.

Intriguingly, the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ network ABC has now opted to broadcast its episodes from 10pm onwards. Having shown the series at 8pm in Season 1, and 9pm in season 2, it seems ABC may be looking to include darker and more harrowing content as the show develops.

‘Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 4 will premiere in the U.S on Tuesday 20th of September.

Underworld: Blood Wars teaser poster

Kate Beckinsale in new ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ trailer

Underworld: Blood Wars teaser poster
Beckinsale – Underworld: Blood Wars

With Kate Beckinsale reprising her role as the deadliest vampire warrior around, fans of the previous movies are looking forward to the first vampire vs werewolf face off since the 2012’s ‘Underworld: Awakening.’

On August 27th, 2014, a reboot of the classic ‘Underworld’ series was announced. Lakeshore Entertainment, along with Corey Goodman, developed a script to revitalise the franchise.

The first official trailer for ‘Blood Wars’ dropped in early September, and we’ve been given a glimpse of who and what to expect in 2017.

This time around, Selene once again finds herself caught in the relentless war between the vampire coven and the Lycans, however it isn’t only the werewolves and their new leader Marius (Tobias Mendez) she has to worry about. In the trailer, we see the vampire Semira, played by English actress Lara Pulver (who some may recognise as The Woman in Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘Sherlock’)

Semira is determined to end the escalating war between the vampires and the Lycans by any means necessary, even if it means killing Selene and drinking her blood to become ‘indestructible.’

Faced with threats from both sides, Selene enlists the help of Theo James’ David, and his father Thomas, portrayed by Charles Dance of ‘Game of Thrones.’

The trailer promises what we have come to expect and love from the ‘Underworld’ franchise, with incredible special effects, action-packed battle scenes on an epic scale, and a hint at romance between Selene and David, a character who is highly likely to be a more central protagonist in future flicks.

Director Anna Foerster will be hoping to eclipse the performance of ‘Awakening,’ which grossed $160 million worldwide in 2012. Foerster, known for her work on ‘Outlander’ and ‘The Day After Tomorrow,’ makes her directing debut with ‘Blood Wars.’

Despite some delay in the release process, the film is expected to be unleashed to its devoted fan base in January 2017.

Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello confirmed as Deathstroke in upcoming Batman movie

Joe Manganiello

Joe Manganiello has been officially confirmed as Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s new solo Batman flick

Just last week, Ben Affleck leaked some hand held test footage from the upcoming ‘Batman’ movie that got fans excited with the first appearance of Deathstroke striding mightily into frame in full battle armour.

Being previously unknown info, it confirmed that the deadly assassin would be featuring in the upcoming blockbuster. This footage having been released, DC Entertainment president and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns had no choice but to confirm that Joe Manganiello is the man behind the mask.

Manganiello, who starred as Flash Thompson in the original ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy with Tobey Maguire, has also appeared in TV shows including ‘ER,’ ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘True Blood.’

Despite being in London at the time of the leaked footage, Manganiello opted to remain silent on details of his cameo appearance.

It seems that – for the time being at least – Deathstroke won’t have a pivotal role in Affleck’s movie, however finally hitting the big screen is a real treat for DC fans. Laying a solid foundation in the DC movie universe opens up the possibility for more appearances and – if we dare to dream – a stand-alone movie.

Being such an iconic villain of the comics, Deathstroke has plenty of memorable storylines and moments to draw on for any future incarnations.

Affleck, being writer, director and star, wants to create the ‘ultimate Batman movie’ with Geoff Johns. The latest rumour has claimed that the movie will jump-start the Batman franchise with a ‘full compliment of villains,’ who are as yet uncomfirmed.

With rumours abound in regards to the plot, we can only hope for more leaked footage like this from those in the know.

As the script is still being worked on by Affleck and Geoff Johns, no official release date has been confirmed yet.

Justice League Dark

New director of ‘Dark Universe’ movie confirmed

Justice League Dark
Justice League Dark

Veteran director Doug Liman has been confirmed as the director of the upcoming live-action adaptation of DC’s ‘Justice League Dark.’ Liman, best known for directing ‘The Bourne Identity’ and sequels, was confirmed as director in August 2016.

Previously understood to be directing the film was Guillermo Del Toro, who has since turned his attention to other projects.

A Warner Brothers/DC Entertainment collaboration, Dark Universe features an Avengers-style collaboration of super heroes, including; Deadman, John Constantine, Zattana, Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon.

Most recognisable to fans will be supernatural detective Constantine, who had a stand-alone movie starring Keanu Reeves in 2005. NBC also aired a short-lived but generally well received TV series, ‘Constantine,’ starring Matt Ryan between October 2014 and February 2015.

The recently confirmed producer, Liman was previously understood to be directing the much-anticipated Marvel film ‘Gambit,’ which has since been pushed back once again to work on the script.

Warner Brothers has made no comment so far, however it is also understood that ‘Dark Universe’ will be produced by Scott Rudin who was the producer of ‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘The Truman Show,’ with Michael Gilio writing the script.

‘Dark Universe,’ known as ‘Justice League Dark’ but renamed for the big screen so as not to confuse fans with the Superman/Batman squad, faces Enchantress in the comics. Much like the ‘Avengers’ series, writer Peter Milligan adopts a ‘no one ruled out’ approach, alluding to the possibility that the League may not remain the same throughout multiple incarnations. As well as the original line up, many other – possible less well known – DC characters have made appearances in the comics.

Justice League Dark has typically been understood to tackle villains and perils deemed ‘unfit’ for The Justice League, however we can expect collaborations between both super-teams in future DC movies.

Captain America: Civil War Avengers

What could Marvel’s future look like post-Infinity War?

Captain America: Civil War Avengers

As one Thor closes, another must open. With the release of ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ rapidly approaching, there’s more discussion than ever as to the direction the MCU will move in the future.

Regarded as a turning point for cinematic colossus that is the MCU, ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ will bid farewell to some of the biggest and best characters we have come to know and love.

Since ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ was released in 2008, Marvel have slickly interwoven and steered their biggest heroes’ movies towards each other, culminating in the long-awaited and explosive mega movie that was ‘The Avengers’ in 2012.

Followed by ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ which grossed over $1 billion worldwide, it seemed like Marvel’s magic formula would continue to yield smash hits and cinematic firsts for years to come.

Alas, all good things must come to an end. ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ could bid farewell to fan favourites such as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Widely understood yet unconfirmed, it would seem that many of the largest stars’ contracts conclude after the movie set to be released in 2018.

Robert Downey Junior, Marvel’s golden boy, is guaranteed to star in ‘Infinity War’ and the highly anticipated ‘Spider Man: Homecoming.’ Other that, there are no more confirmed films for the superstar.

Chris Evans, one of the most consistent characters in the MCU, seems to have only one movie left on his roster. ‘Infinity War’ could see the last of the First Avenger in a major role, however co-director Joe Russo has stated that Steve Rogers will NOT return as Captain America, but will still be instrumental in taking down ‘the big Purple guy’ [Thanos]

Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo – notably absent from ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ – are set to star in Thor: Ragnarok, alongside Tom Hiddlestone. Ruffalo has signed a 6-movie deal with Marvel – of which he has only fulfilled 2 – So we can expect plenty of the Gamma grunt in the future. Hemsworth, for now at least, looks to be making his final incarnation as Thor in ‘Infinity War.’

Both Jeremy Renner and Scarlet Johansson seem to have made their penultimate appearances for The Avengers in ‘Civil War,’ with neither confirmed for any movies past ‘Infinity War,’ despite calls for a potential ‘Black Widow’ solo flick.

What next for Marvel?

With the meat of the main cast seemingly departing after ‘Infinity War,’ there has been plenty of speculation as to the direction the MCU will take following on.

One hugely popular character we can count on seeing is Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther. Debuting in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ Boseman has signed a minimum 5 movie contract with Marvel, including a solo outing as the king of Wakanda.

Other lead characters will see the return of Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Paul Rudd as Ant Man and Anthony Mackie as Falcon. The cast of ‘Civil War’ will be leading the fight in ‘Infinity War,’ with the original ‘Avengers’ cast supporting.

Exciting new potential characters set to fill the void include Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) The Collector (Benedicio del Toro) and Evangeline Lilly as Ant Man’s ‘The Wasp.’ Brie Larson is also cited to debut as a female Captain Marvel, paving the way for the possibility of Marvel’s first female-fronted film.

Debuting in ‘Civil War,’ Tom Holland’s ‘Spiderman’ web-slung onto our screens as a young, inexperienced, yet enthusiastic hero. Setting a solid precedent as a combatant, with plenty of wit to boot, ‘Spider Man: Homecoming’ has the chance to open up an avenue for the third major reboot of Spider Man, following on from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Confirmed as one of Robert Downey Jr’s last major appearances as Iron Man, the movie is set to be released in July, 2017.

With nearly 2 years to wait until the next major MCU blockbuster, there’s still an opportunity for even more new characters to appear. One thing that the new kids on the block in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ made clear is that that the ‘Avengers’ super-franchise and more importantly, the MCU, is far from done with us.
