Review
Thanks to our friends at Empire VIP, I recently had the chance to preview the first episode of Netflix’s upcoming series, “Kaos.” While this isn’t a full review, I wanted to share my initial thoughts and whether it’s worth adding to your watchlist come August 29th.
“Kaos” introduces us to a modern world where the Greek gods are not only real but are frequently worshipped on live TV. The story follows two distinct threads: the all-powerful Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) on his lavish Mount Olympus (reimagined as a luxurious Spanish villa, adds to the unique aesthetic), and Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), a mortal woman grappling with life’s uncertainties.
At the heart of the narrative is Zeus’ obsession with an ancient prophecy foretelling his downfall. We also glimpse the mortals who are unwittingly connected to this prophecy, setting the stage for intriguing developments. While the first episode doesn’t reveal too much, it certainly piqued my interest and left me wanting more.
Unsurprisingly, the show’s biggest draw is Jeff Goldblum, who delivers a delightfully eccentric and narcissistic Zeus. His scenes are filled with humor and offer a fresh take on the iconic character, It’s always entertaining to witness characters with god-like abilities (in this case, actual Gods) show very human and very flawed traits such as anger, narcissism and pettiness which these gods show in large doses.
As of episode one we have only seen a few of the gods, namely Janet McTeer as Hera and Nabhaa Rizwan as Dionysus (which is a deep cut in Greek Mythology from my understanding), but there is little doubt the remaining Gods are going to be comically entertaining and flawed to watch.
Aurora Perrineau shines as Riddy, a relatable character struggling to make decisions in her life and love. Her story provides a compelling contrast to the self-absorbed gods, showcasing the parallels and differences between the mortal and divine worlds.
Verdict
The first episode of “Kaos” is more than enough to hook viewers and leave them eager for more. I, for one, will be binge-watching the rest when it drops on August 29th.
