Despite the mixed reviews, ‘Suicide Squad’ seems to have enjoyed a successful box office result; securing nearly $315 million from a $175 million production.
The movie’s most memorable character by far has turned out to be none other than Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn; a good result considering it is the first big-screen outing for The Joker’s muse.
Under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, Robbie has been confirmed to star in a ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off movie focusing one one of the best known (yet least exposed) supervillains in the DC universe.
Despite being touted by some as a ‘Harley Quinn spin-off,’ the movie has hinted at featuring many other female heroes and villains, as yet unconfirmed.
Rumours include appearances from classic Batman supervillains such as Poison Ivy and even the possibility of Batgirl, a move highly anticipated by Bat-fans.
Working as both star and Executive Producer of the movie, Margot Robbie will be leading the DCU into an era of more female-led superhero movies, following in the steps of ‘Wonder Woman,’ expected to release in June 2017.
Very few details are currently known about the spin-off, however the deal signed with Warner Bros. is expected to gross over $700 million directly from Harley Quinn’s character, making it a no-brainer for the production company behind recent blockbusters such as ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘The Conjuring 2.’
With the spotlight having been shed recently on a lack of focus on female leads in superhero movies, the ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off will be a move from the DCU welcomed by many.
