We’ve seen plenty of big Hollywood productions fall fowl of the Coronavirus pandemic. But one film which has remained relatively untouched, until know, is Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake.
The film is currently set to release globally on December 18, with Warner Bros. feeling comfortable enough to keep the film in place as others have shifted around in on the release schedule.
But now, in a new interview at the Shanghai International Film Festival (translated by the team at Indie Wire), Villeneuve has shared his thoughts on completing the film under rather constrained conditions.
“I was planning to go back and shoot some elements later because I wanted to readjust the movie,” the filmmaker explained. “Time was a luxury that I had. I didn’t know that it would be a pandemic. So when the virus hit North America as we were about to go back to do those elements, the impact was that it crushed my schedule right now.”
Members of the global cast had previously discussed in the press that plans were to do a number of additional pickups over the summer. This clearly hasn’t been able to take place with restrictions on travel as they currently are.
“It will be a sprint to finish the movie on time right now because we were allowed to go back to shoot those elements in a few weeks.” Continued Villeneuve. “It also meant that I have to finish some elements of the movie, like VFX and the editing, being in Montreal as my crew stayed in Los Angeles.”
Hopefully Dune will still be able to make its December date. But we’re willing to wait until the movie is the best that it can be!
