Synopsis
Brion Markov is determined to rescue his missing sister – even if it means throwing down against the entire League of Shadows.
Review
After two more humorous episodes it was time that Young Justice: Outsiders refocussed itself on the mission at hand. With “Rescue Op” the series goes back to basics as its newest characters go head-to-head with Ra’s Al Ghul and his followers.
There’s quite a lot going on in this episode. Particularly for Batman fans. Despite the Dark Knight not appearing, in fact even Dick is a glorified cameo in the proceedings here.
It would be hard not to tell a Ra’s Al Ghul story without involving the Bat family somehow. With Dick now Nightwing and Tim Drake rocking the Robin costume it’s not hard to guess who might show up alongside Talia and Ra’s.
There’s some great character development for the growing Outsiders team in this episode. The episode features great chemistry between Brion and Halo. Troy Baker and Zehra Fazal have some great scenes together but also seem to spark well. I often find it difficult to buy in to relationships in animated media, particularly where casts record separately. Here it seems like the cast do work alongside each other at times and it does add new depth to the interpersonal relationships.
It’s also plainly obvious that Forager is both a fan and crew favourite. His scenes are, once again, a highlight of the episode. His devotion to his hive is quickly becoming the emotional heart of the Outsiders and the series itself. It’s a testament to the strong writing of Young Justice.
There’s a number of complex stories now going on in the series. It’s being well balanced by dividing up the cast of the show but you can also feel that something bigger is coming. The show is being constructed in a way that at some point all of what we are seeing will segue in to one huge conclusion. This episode is a strong example of that.
It widens the world of Young Justice to include Ra’s and the League of Shadows, it introduces more of the Bat family and is still able to flesh out it’s already existing characters all in the space of 22mins.
That’s some damn fine writing…
Verdict
“Rescue Op” has some great fan service for Bat-family fans. It shines a light on the newest characters to the franchise and makes for a nice change of pace after two much lighter episodes.
