Episode 5 slightly reduces the breakneck pace of the final My Hero Academia season, serving as a critical strategic pivot before the ultimate confrontation.
All For One has been removed from the board, but only after Bakugo was also tragically taken out of the fight. We are left with the final, desperate battle of Shigaraki vs. Deku, who fights desperately to prevent Shigaraki from destroying the entire island of Japan and, subsequently, the world.
Deku is pushed to his absolute limits due to the overuse of the One For All Quirks, even being sent flying all the way to Mt. Fuji. A single use of Shigaraki’s destructive Quirk at this location would trigger a volcanic reaction, effectively dooming everyone. It seems Deku is out of ideas, and brute force is clearly not the solution here.
The situation worsens when Shigaraki is able to briefly make contact and, in doing so, steals the Danger Sense Quirk (originally held by the Fourth OFA User, Shinomori). This completely changes the dynamics of the battle, as Shigaraki can now use that warning Quirk, making it nearly impossible for Deku to land a decisive hit.
Finally, a last-ditch effort is proposed: the previous vestiges of One For All have a wild idea to fight Shigaraki from the inside, similar to what happened with Stars and Stripes against All For One. This will render Deku quirkless, so Daigoro Banjo (the user of Blackwhip) remains behind, allowing Deku to maintain a final, makeshift form with the Blackwhip Quirk holding his body together. It’s a final Hail Mary, but at this point, they have no other choice.
Verdict
Compared to the previous batch of episodes, the animation wasn’t quite as explosive this week; it acted more as a strategic setup for the next few weeks of heavy battle scenes, which I expect to look phenomenal. Still, I am very much loving the pace of the final season. It’s keeping the fights fast and intense; even a strategic setup episode like this still goes hard.
