Monkey Meat #1 is published by Image Comics, written and illustrated by Juni Ba.

Print copies will be available 5th January 2022 either direct from Image Comics or from your local comic book shops. Digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

DJELIYA creator JUNI BA introduces a new fantasy universe in this ANTHOLOGY SERIES! The Monkey Meat Company made its fortune selling cans of processed meat all around the world. Using that money to fuel their wacky experiments, they turned their native island into a magical hyper-capitalist hellscape where even demons have to pay rent! Follow the lives of the creatures of Monkey Meat Island in this fun, action-packed romp. Each issue is its own story!

    Review

This week for review I was introduced to a rather interesting story concept and after some brief research online my interest was peaked, Monkey Meat is a dark story of shady corporate actions with hilarious anecdotes.

The Monkey Meat company has taken over the processed meat market and made millions from rather suspicious meat produce but there is a new product on the way that will change humanity forever, 216 Compound is a solution that could change the human race as we know it, but will it be for the better? Or is it more of a money making process? So many dark questions need answers.

This is the first time I have come across Juni Ba as a creative and I like was I saw, first impressions from the first issue is that the arc is certainly going to be an interesting one and one that promises to be dramatically darker with a shady corporate engine at the helm getting bigger all the time.

I enjoyed the story and found the writing was a good insight into the universe that Juni Ba is creating, it will be dark, corrupt and full of dishonesty which in terms of comics makes for a great read and one that I am excited to see how it will unfold as we move along the arc.

The illustration style of Monkey Meat is quite unique in it’s styling, June Ba has brought a unique blending of a dark and dramatic styling and mixing it with plenty of comedic moments to keep the reader locked on the page. Overall I enjoyed the experience and look forward to see what’s next.

    Verdict

I enjoyed the introduction to Monkey Meat and its expanding multiverse, a solid mix of dark corruption and comedy to keep an interesting story vibrant and engaging, I look forward to see what Juni Ba is bringing next.
