What Happened To The Timeline? A Closer Look At The STAR TREK: PICARD Teaser

Yesterday was June 16th, otherwise known as Picard Day. The annual celebration held aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D to honour its Captain (and our hero) Jean Luc Picard. To celebrate the day Paramount+ released another teaser for the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Picard.

Though the series doesn’t return until 2022 shooting is well underway on new episodes. The teaser (below) features a tonne of new footage and teases what could be an extremely exciting, time travel mystery for the legendary Starfleet Admiral.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the imagery from the trailer and see what we can unpick about this new adventure…

    A Familiar Location

When we last left our group of heroes in season 1, they were still aboard Captain Cris Rios’ ship, La Sirena. Picard had only recently awoken in a new, cybernetic body after finally succumbing to a long-standing illness.

The opening shot of the season 2 teaser takes us right back to where the series began, Chateaux Picard. It looks like in the intervening period between seasons Jean Luc (Sir Patrick Stewart) may have returned home. Though at the same time the dialogue in this scene seems to feature a confused Picard searching for Romulan aide Laris (Orla Brady).

“What the hell is happening here?” says Picard as he enters the house, certainly suggesting his return home is not of his own doing.

Laris appears later in the trailer looking equally confused as to the situation.

    An Unwelcome Reunion

Our first shot of Picard is shortly followed by the long awaited return of John de Lancie as Q. It’s safe to say that Picard isn’t overly enamoured to see the mischievous imp. Clearly the passing years has not improved their relationship.

“Mon capitaine, how I’ve missed you.” says Q.

Q’s dialogue teases a greater understanding of the situation. But in classic Q fashion he’s giving nothing away. Over the following series of quick shots Q narrates the trailer saying “Welcome, my friend, to the very end of the road not taken.” Is this an alternate future?

    Alternate Realities?

Lending credence to the theory that Q, or some unseen force, has sent Picard and the La Sirena crew to an alternate timeline, we see a quick succession of shots where each of the main cast finds themselves in unexpected situations.

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and Elnor (Evan Evagora) appear to the on the run. Soji Asher (Isa Briones) stands amidst a fountain. Agnes (Alison Pill) appears to be staring at something ominous off-camera. Finally, Cris (Santiago Cabrera) appears to still be connected with Starfleet.

Whilst later scenes confirm the cast has been able to reunite, could they initially find themselves separated in this new universe? Of note, these scenes are narrated by an unseen female character who says “time has been broken.” Is Picard the one to fix it?

    A Return To Duty

A scene which appears without too much context in the trailer takes us back to Starfleet. The scene also seems to put Picard and Raffi back in universe. There doesn’t seem to be any de-aging on Patrick Stewart so could this be a sign that his commission has been reinstated following his exposure of the Romulan conspiracy?

Looking behind the assembled officers are a number of flags for federation members including: Klingon, Vulcan, Bajoran and Ferengi. Though the delegates themselves don’t represent these species it would be great to see some of the classic Trek races appear!

     Annika Hansen?

One of the biggest signs that something is not right with the timeline comes at the very end of the trailer. Our first look at Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine sees the character wake up to find her Borg implants are all gone.

In this timeline have they been able to be removed? Or is this an Annika Hansen who was never assimilated in to the collective?

The character appears to be wearing a wedding ring and also has a com badge which features an totally unfamiliar design. What could it all mean?

Have you got any theories as to what could be happening here? Let us know in the comments below!
