Joel Schumacher, the director of Batman Forever and The Lost Boys, has passed away at the age of 80.
Schumacher, who also directed St. Elmo’s Fire, has been fighting a long battle with cancer.
Born August 29, 1939, in New York, NY, Schumacher was notable for his glossy approach to filmmaking. It was his unique style which caught the eye of Warner Bros. who were looking to brighten up the Batman franchise in the wake of parental concerns over 1992’s Batman Returns.
Though he was famous for adding nipples to the Batsuit, Schumacher had a notable career as one of Hollywood’s great storytellers. His credits include 1980’s pics D.C. Cab and The Incredible Shrinking Woman plus The Phantom of the Opera, Flatliners, Flawless, 8MM Phone Booth, Trespass.
Most recently he directed two episodes of Netflix hit House of Cards in 2013.
He also on a number of high-profile music videos including Seal’s chart-topping hit “Kiss from a Rose,” from the soundtrack to Batman Forever; INXS’ “Devil Inside” (1988); and the Smashing Pumpkins’ “The End Is the Beginning Is the End,” for which he earned a Best Director nom at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
Our condolences go out to his loved ones.
