Finally, after three weeks atop the North America box office, Bad Boys For Life has been de-throned by Warner Bros. Birds of Prey. Elsewhere on the chart Oscar hopeful 1917 showed impressive legs ahead of last night’s ceremony.

Warner Bros. hit a speed bump in the road of DC Films as Birds of Prey landed atop the chart with $33.25m. Going in to the weekend the film was widely expected to gross between $50-55m although Warner Bros. insiders point to the studio looking more around the $45m mark.

Either way Birds of Prey underperformed despite impressive reviews from fans and critics (read our 9/10 review here). The film also scored a healthy B+ CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences.

The news is more encouraging on the international front where Birds of Prey raked in $48m from 72 markets. Thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak in China the film has lost any chance of gripping the Asian market which is currently in a tailspin.

Leading the way in international markets was Mexico with an estimated $4.6m launch followed by Russia ($4m), UK ($3.9m), Brazil ($2.8m), France ($2.7m), Australia ($2.7m), Indonesia ($2.4m), Korea ($1.9m), Germany ($1.8m), Taiwan ($1.5m), Italy ($1.4m) and Spain ($1.38m). Japan will be the final market to open on March 20.

Globally the film has grossed $81.25m to date from a reported $84.5m production budget.

Bad Boys For Life had to settle for second place this week. The Sony Pictures film dropped -32% for an estimated $12m three-day and pushing the domestic total to over $166m.

Internationally, the film added another $15.8m for an overseas gross totalling $170m and a worldwide total now reaching $336m. Don’t forget that a fourth entry in the franchise is now also in active development.

Continuing to show incredibly strong holdovers is Universal Pictures 1917 which takes third place on this week’s chart. The multi-Oscar nominee fell by only -5% on previous week, grossing $9m and taking it’s North America total to $132.5m.

The World War One epic continues to play strongly in international markets, bringing in around $15m this weekend. The Sam Mendes directed film has now grossed $287m and is sure to be boosted this week following its performance at last night’s Oscars ceremony.

Universal’s Dolittle finished in fourth with an estimated $6.66m, dipping just -12% as it heads in to its fourth weekend in release.

Rounding out the top five this week is Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level (reviewed here), which brought in an estimated $5.5m, dipping just -8% as it slides in to its ninth week of release. It’s domestic gross now tops $298m whilst internationally saw its international cume rise to $470m for a worldwide total of $768m.
