Another weekend has come and gone and Aquaman remains king of the North American box office. For a third straight weekend James Wan’s epic undersea adventure has ruled the roost at the domestic box office.
Falling roughly 41% from its second weekend Aquaman amassed another $30.7M. It’s domestic total is now estimated at $259.7M. According to Forbes the movie has now surpassed Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259M in 2014), Batman ($251M in 1989) and Men in Black ($251M in 1997).
But it wasn’t just at home that Aquaman performed well.
Over the weekend the movie made another $56.2M from 79 for a running total of $681M. That’s the highest international gross for any DC Comics adaption in the history of cinema. All in all the movie has now grossed a huge $940M worldwide.
It’s now guaranteed that Aquaman will surpass $1bn in the coming week. The question now becomes where will it stop? If it can make it to $1.1bn then it will have surpassed the lifetime gross of both The Dark Knight ($1bn) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08bn) and become the highest grossing DC Comics adaption worldwide.
