Aquaman: King of Atlantis (DC Comics/HBO Max)

HBO Max working on new animated AQUAMAN: KING OF ATLANTIS mini-series

Aquaman is taking a break from our screens until 2022 but that doesn’t mean that he will be taking a holiday. It has been announced that director James Wan is going to be executive producing a new, three-part, animated series for Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis will focus on the Arthur Curry as he takes up the throne and will take environmental issues. A brief logging for the series reads:

“The series begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”

Speaking of the project Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said “This DC property is a fan-favorite, rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines. On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”

AQUAMAN surpasses BATMAN v SUPERMAN in North America

These days there’s very little news on Warner Bros. Aquaman. The movie is quietly heading towards its home video release in March but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still box office hurdles to conquer.

Over the weekend the movie grossed a further $1.8M in North America. That may seem like a small figure but it was enough to help the King of Atlantis cross $331M.

Now sitting at $331.3M Aquaman has surpassed the lifetime gross of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That film ended its box office run with $330.3M back in 2016.

With a couple of weeks left to go before it closes Aquaman is likely to close its North American run with around $335M. Worldwide the movie has now grossed $1.13bn.

AQUAMAN co-writer returns for sequel

Deadline is reporting that development is on going for an Aquaman sequel. Following the over one billion dollar haul of the first movie it was clear Warner Bros. would be looking to start work on a sequel.

It’s now been reported that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has been tapped to pen the sequel. Johnson-McGoldrick is credited as a co-writer on the first movie. It’s unclear at this stage if Will Beal will also return to co-write the movie.

The trade is also reporting that the sequel based on The Trench will also feature Jason Momoa and Amber Heard in some capacity. It is reported that the focus will be placed on a “beast who is new in DC Comics mythology” attacking our aquatic heroes.

AQUAMAN breaks $1.1bn at worldwide box office

Though it has yet to release in Japan, Aquaman is heading towards the end of its run in many international territories. The movie is grabbing less and less headlines as it rockets towards its home video release. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t still making money.

Over the weekend the film grossed around $9M worldwide. Though a small amount it finally tipped the movie over the $1.1bn mark.

Already crowned the highest grossing DC Comics movie, Aquaman has now made an estimated $1.107bn at the worldwide box office. With Japan opening in March it could still push that total a little higher before leaving cinemas for good.

Warner Bros. “far less focused on a shared universe” post AQUAMAN

The success of Aquaman poses a distinct problem for Warner Bros. What to do with the DC Film universe moving forwards?

There are now two streams of movies within the universe. Those like Aquaman and Wonder Woman which have proven critical and fan successes and those like Justice League and Suicide Squad which have proven to be more divisive.

Luckily for fans it seems like now, more than ever, the studio has a much better idea about the trajectory of its film franchise. A new quote from chairman Toby Emmerich in The Hollywood Reporter points towards a more standalone approach in the future.

“We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now,” Emmerich says. “We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors.”

How do you feel about more standalone movies in the future?
