By now it’s no secret that a sequel to the hugely successful M3GAN is on the way. But with over 12 months until M3gan 2.0 hits screens, today we’re taking a look at where the already critically acclaimed and financially successful franchise could go next.
Be warned, you might not want to read on if you haven’t already seen the film…
M3GAN takes on the internet?
A constant throughout the film are the devices that others use to connect to the internet. Gemma (Allison Williams) has a house full of technology. From her thesis robot to the Alexa-styled device, Elsie, which controls many of the house’s functions.
At the end of the film, as the dust settles after the final fight between Gemma, Cady and M3GAN, the police arrive to clean up the mess and the pair leave the house whilst the camera lingers on the base Elsie unit sitting on the kitchen counter. The device lights up just before the scene cuts to black… could M3GAN have entered the internet?
Earlier in the film, the killer AI bot had told Gemma she had features which her creator wasn’t aware of so perhaps becoming wireless was one of them?
A potential sequel could find M3GAN’s AI spreading across the globe, wreaking havoc as she goes. Whilst that would potentially remove the physical form that has become synonymous with the TikTok dance craze, it would greatly up the ante.
War of the M3gans?
A subplot which runs throughout the film is the way in which David (Ronny Chieng) treats his assistant Kurt (Stephane Garneau-Monten). David is often seen talking down to Kurt, ordering him around and belittling his work. But then later it’s revealed that Kurt is, in fact spying for a rival corporation.
Before both men are attacked and killed by M3GAN during the infamous dance scene we find out that Kurt was able to steal all of the robots schematics and load them on to a flash drive. What happened to the drive after that moment remains a mystery.
There’s a distinct possibility that he was able to deliver those schematics to whomever it is he was working for. That company could, as we speak, be working on their own fleet of M3GAN style knock-offs.
A sequel could find the original M3GAN searching for a new body and coming up against an army of counterparts. There are several different ways that story could go. Gemma could find herself tasked with fixing the issues in her own AI to use a new army of M3GAN’s to stop the OG model. Or the OG M3GAN might find herself in control of an entire army which she uses to try and take control of the city. Maybe the country. Maybe even the world!
M3GAN vs. Annabelle
A popular idea amongst fans is to pit M3GAN against other famous creepy dolls. There’s M3GAN versus Annabelle, another creation which has ties to James Wan. There’s also M3GAN versus Chucky.
Personally we’d like to discover that M3GAN was actually another spin-off of Wan’s The Conjuring universe. A future sequel could find M3GAN learning about the existence of Annabelle and searching for her. Throughout the first film M3GAN is shown to be curious about the world around her. A story could easily be built around her wanting to understand how this possessed doll has come to life, pitting the two against each other in a battle of wits.
Sounds a little far-fetched doesn’t it? But I bet you’d still show up to watch it on the big screen!
Produced by Jason Blum and James Wan, M3GAN is directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone (Housebound). The terrifying screenplay comes from Akela Cooper (Malignant) and is based on a story by both Cooper and Wan.
The film also stars Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace), Jen Van Epps (Cowboy Bebop) and Lori Dungey (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended edition).
M3GAN is in UK cinemas now.
