Synopsis
Vanessa and the Five reflect on their strange life as children, the cult, and the truth about the Chimera’s nature. Meanwhile Regan remembers the grim role she played in Hannah’s greatest tragedy while checking on her, but it’s not long before Barret brings her terrifying news of the Chimera…
Review
In this issue we see the return of the popular horror series where we see a type of flashback to the younger life of the cult giving more of a deeper story to the Chimera and giving a bit more of an understanding to the evil goings on.
Regan still feels a spiritual connection to Hannah and the cult still being able to communicate, there is an underlying sense of unease as Vanessa seems to go back to the roots of the cult this is horror at it’s finest making the hairs stand up on the back of your neck with each chilling word. The end of the book brings a familiar visitor to the fray, familiar to Regan and the readers, the next issue looks set to be even darker.
Cullen Bunn has effortlessly crafted a horror story that isn’t all about hacks and slashes this story chills you to your core and stays in your thoughts even after you finish, I would say this probably wasn’t my go to genre for comics but will definitely say it’s up there now.
The illustrations are from Jonas Scharf who keeps the ongoing style of the books so far, a dark realistic feel with just enough gorey detail to grab your attention throughout, it’s almost as though the illustrations take you on a dark visual journey.
Verdict
A welcome return for a final chapter of one of my favourite books from the recent releases and I’m so glad it has returned strong, I feel sometimes a story can lose it’s way or become more of a filler but Basilisk has no danger of this.
