Dark Blood #4 is published by BOOM Studios!, written by Latoya Morgan, illustrated by Moisés Hidalgo, coloured by AHG and lettered by AndWorld Design.

Print copies of DARK BLOOD #4 are on sale now exclusively at local comic book shops or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies will be available to download from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle.

    Synopsis

Can Avery clear his name and find out what’s really happening to him? On the run, Avery must elude the cops for the accidental death that he’s sure to be blamed for. Theo, Avery’s brother, tries to convince him to explain that it wasn’t his fault, but Avery is skeptical that the authorities will believe a Black man… and terrified at the possible truth behind the incident.

    Review

In the latest issue of the Dark Blood story we are taken deeper into the past of Avery and deeper into the events that happened, with the use of flashbacks we understand more about the man Avery is and the struggles he faces.

Having these hidden powers is definitely something that Avery didn’t ask for nor wanted and he desperately needs to find the answer as to why he now has them. Latoya Morgan perfectly touches on the subject of race as the police, who happen to be white are hot on Avery’s tail seeking justice for the death earlier in the story, all Avery has to do is state his innocence, well yes that would be fine but the issue of race is going through Avery’s mind, how will a black man be able to protest his innocence to a white police force, this is handled well by Latoya Morgan in the whole of this story arc and really tells the reader the struggles that are happening everyday.

I find Dark Blood an interesting story and enjoying how the arc is unfolding, it’s good to see another side of the story of special powers when normally you willingly turn into a superhero but what if you never wanted the powers? What happens then?

A writer with such high caliber as Latoya Morgan can only write such a deep and meaningful story with so much crammed into one story, each book so far has been a read in one go it just glues you to the pages straight away, the writing is simply spellbinding. The illustrations from Moisés Hidalgo compliment the story really well using dark tones to bring the story to life in dramatic ways, I really couldn’t think of a better creative team to work with this story.

The only bad part I can find about this comic is that it ends, I just can’t wait for issue #5 to release.

    Verdict

As you can tell from the review you could say I am a bit of a fan of Dark Blood, it’s not your normal run of the mill comic and I think that’s it’s main strength, maybe I wouldn’t have normally picked this up over my normal reads but I am so glad it has been brought to my attention, a great read from cover to cover.
