    Synopsis

Alabama, 1955. Avery Aldridge was a decorated soldier during World War II; now he’s just an ordinary young Black man busy providing for his wife and daughter. But the wounds of the past have a way of coming back, and he’ll soon discover that he is anything but ordinary. After a run-in awakens strange new abilities, Avery’s about to become more powerful than he could have ever dared to dream… in a country and society that never wanted him to have any power.

    Review

In this new six part series writer Latoya Morgan has brought us a superhero story like no other. It’s thought provoking and gritty in one swoop and gives the reader an intense page turner that you won’t want to put down.

The story of Avery Aldridge, a once decorated soldier who is now trying to adjust to normal life will be fully relatable to so many people. Readers that have been through or know someone that has been through that process and will know the personal struggles they can face. Morgan has exquisitely translated those feelings to the page here.

Avery comes across as a more accidental here. Someone that doesn’t really want to show his powers and would rather just live the simple life with his family on civvy street. Unfortunately there are others that don’t want him to have that life and provoke him to bring out the powers that he is trying to hide.

Morgan had definitely brought the experience of screenwriting cult classics like The Walking Dead and Into The Badlands to the comic world as the story of Dark Blood expertly flows from page to page, truly left me open mouthed at the end, I can’t wait for issue 2 to come out.

The illustrations from Barna are unreal, intriguingly dark but with light enough tones to find the images relatable.

    Verdict

Once again BOOM! Studios have knocked it out the park with another great looking series that I will be longingly waiting for the next issue.
