AVATAR: FRONTIERS OF PANDORA What we know so far

Avatar is still a thing. The first film came out in 2009 and we’re just over a year away from seeing James Cameron’s Avatar 2 which looks to explore more of Pandora and implement the newest forms of technology. 12 years later, people are still taking about Avatar whether it’s debating if it’s any good (which it defintiely is just maybe not in regards to the overly familiar story), or watching as Avatar and Avengers: Endgame battled for the “top-grossing film” crown. Cameron’s stunning and revolutionary visual hit has endured in popular culture and this year’s E3 hit us with a very exciting surprise. An Avatar game… Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

This won’t be Avatar‘s first game. Oh no. Die hard fans may remember the addictive video game that coincided with the release of the first film. We remember getting it for Christmas that year and spending all day flying on a Banshee and riding the Thanator. What a Christmas it was. For its time, it was a great game. But can you imagine the type of game we could get? With next-gen consoles setting a brand new standard, Frontiers of Pandora has the potential to be a truly special game.

But what do we know so far? Honestly, not a great deal. The E3 reveal was an absolute surprise that I don’t think anyone saw coming. Did we need an Avatar game? Well, maybe not but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

It’s bad news for certain gamers though. This game will be exclusive to next-gens only: PlayStation 5 / Xbox series X|S / PC / Stadia / Luna. Considering the scale of Frontiers of Pandora and the visual potential, we’re not incredibly surprised by this. Ubisoft are aiming to make this a truly exclusive next-gen experience.

If you’re interested in the more technical side of this title, you can check out the E3 breakdown which details the changes that went into the Snowdrop Engine in order to create Pandora and its “highly detailed environments”.

Players will be introduced to an entirely new area of Pandora, specifically the Western Frontier. Essentially, this game will allow players to explore areas that the film never touched. Considering how the first film primarily focused on the one tribe, we’re about to see Pandora like we’ve never seen before. With new creatures, plants, elements and cultures, players will be able to attain a greater understanding of Pandora and all of its wonders.

Ubisoft has promised a gorgeous open world adventure that will provide various different opportunities and a completely immersive experience. This first-person extravaganza will put us in the shoes of the Na’vi as they fight for survival against the plethora of dangerous creatures both on the ground and in the sky, and against the RDA forces.

“Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.”

What will be interesting to see is whether any familiar faces pop up. It’s certainly possible, but then that may depend on when this particular game takes place. Purely based on the fact that the RDA are still present on Pandora, this could take place after the first film as the Na’vi deal with the remaining factions, or even before the film when the RDA’s grip on Pandora is firm and strong.

Avatar 2 is due out on the 16th December of 2022 so this game will be a great way to revitalize interest in the somewhat stagnent franchise and to ultimately capitalise on that hype of the second installment. Regardless of your thoughts on the film, it’s hard to deny that the release had everyone gripped- the numbers don’t lie. 2022 could be the year dedicated to all things Avatar. Of course, there is an element of risk. Considering how quiet the franchise has been in terms of producing new content, it’s somehwat difficult to predict how well the sequel will perform and how excited people are for Frontiers of Pandora.

We’re pretty excited so you’ll definitely see us preordering the game when it becomes available. If they plan on releasing any special editions, not even Eywa could stop us from jumping onboard

You can check out the stunning cinematic trailer below:

Are you excited to play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. The game is expected to drop sometime in 2022, just in time for James Cameron’s Avatar 2. Don’t forget to check out more gaming news here.
