SUPERMAN & LOIS 1×05 “The Best Of Smallville” Review

    Synopsis

As Smallville celebrates its first Harvest Festival since Martha’s passing, Clark is reminded what his mother meant to him and learns a lesson that will help him move past her death. Meanwhile, Lois makes a breakthrough in the investigation of Morgan Edge. Lastly, Kyle tries to reconnect with Lana, but it seems like he might be falling back into his old ways.

    Review

We’re back for one last ride with the Super Family before they leave us until May and they have left us with some pretty big revelations to mull over the next month and a half.

Clarke is trying to hype up his family to the Smallville Harvest Festival although it seems he is the only one keen. It’s a yearly festival where all the residents give a little back to the community which just adds to why Clark is the way he is.

Super teenage life is mixed in throughout the episode and we are shown a teenage Clark who was not quite the boyscout we all imagine he was, much like every other teenager he had his moments! But on top of that he did some vigilante work around town when needed.
Seeing Superboy do his thing was pretty amazing, it humanises him alot more as this guy who struggled with these powers just like his sons will inevitably have to go through themselves. Staying on the awkward teenage years train, Jordan is on the up and up, Sarah has asked him on a date to the festival and he’s on the football team.  Meanwhile Jonathan is heading the other way, originally his girlfriend was due to visit but chose to break up with him via a phone call, he’s been benched from the football team and lost all his Metropolis friends.
I’ve said each week that I felt Jonathan was edging closer to exploding considering how much he has had to lose in order to help and support his brother and family and for a while he just went with it.  His break up was the final straw before he really let loose on his parents and to rebel just that little bit too far. He hangs with the wrong guys and dabbles in a little underage drinking which puts him on the destructive path ultimately ruining Jordan’s date with Sarah (although her Dad’s drunken antics also played its part in ruining the night) but got to admit watching Papa Kent immediately smell booze on his son was a unique use of his powers!
Back at the house Jordan comes down to accept his punishment and out of left field, Clark gives him a pass.  He remembers the mistakes he made as a teenager and awards Jonathan his one time pass but to give Smallville a try before immediately returning to Metropolis. Man! Clark and Lois are great parents!

Now the other half of the story this week we have the Lois vs Edge battle taking a surprise turn.  Sharron Powell who came to Smallville Gazette regarding the mystery of what happened to her son Derek who vanished after working for Edge now amazingly he has returned and has nothing but good things to say about the wealthy juggernaut!
Soon after though his eyes hurt and he causes a building to burn down and runs away.
BOOM! Another point for my previous theory that Edge is using X-Kryptonite to power up normal humans with powers similar to Clark (although it seems they become unstable).
So after nearly killing a bunch of Smallville residents and having a severe case of sore eyes he contacts Edge’s right hand woman Lindsey Larr (who also happens to be rocking some super powers of her own) she gives Derek another blast of X-Kryptonite and turns him into your low budget Superman.
Clark tries to take down a now flying Derek while preventing him from causing more damage around Smallville, before they both get shot down by Captain Luthor in his RV. Ultimately Derek ultimately dies due to his powers overwhelming his body leaving behind a horrified Clark.

Finally we have Captain Luthor, turns out in his universe Lois Lane was his one and only love.  As mentioned briefly earlier, he has downgraded his futuristic space vehicle to a more humble RV but is now operating more covertly to take down the Man of Steel. This is a far more complex and calculated Luthor than what Earth Prime currently has with Jon Cryer and I am all for it! Lex is the type of guy who has already won a game of Chess before you have even started! Captain Luthor has now made his move and made contact with Earth Prime Lois so it will be interesting to see if she is the key to stopping him down the line.

OK so now we’re five episodes in and being thrown into a break the show decided to leave us with some tasty cliffhangers.
Jordan and Sarah’s budding romance was downgraded to a friendship, admittedly they both have lots going on in their lives at the moment despite being teenagers so this is a pretty mature response rather than throwing themselves into a relationship to avoid their dramas.

Then Jordan gets jumped by Tag who has secretly returned to Smallville with a grudge against him, it seems he has found out why he changed and is pinning it entirely on Jordan himself with a middle of the forest beatdown and we’re left to wait and see what happens!

    Verdict

So much to unpack and we are only 5 episodes into this series!  The show is incredibly fast paced and stuffed with worthwhile plots, these characters continue to get fleshed out more and more which within 5 episodes is a pretty phenomenal achievable compared to the other Earth Prime CW Shows.  While it is disappointing we are thrown into a break while Supergirl finishes her final lap, I will very much be looking forward to the next time we return to the quiet town of Smallville.

    Next Episode

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tullock who return as the titular characters. They will, in turn, be joined by Emmanuelle Chriqui as Clark’s ex-girlfriend, Lana Lang, Erik Valdez as Lana’s husband, Kyle Cushing. Dylan Walsh will portray Lois’ father, General Sam Lane. Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin also co-star in the series as Superman and Lois’ sons, Jonathan and Jordan Kent.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
