Alex Kurtzman has recently found himself in charge of the small screen Star Trek universe. The prouder recently appeared on the Deadline podcast and gave fans a huge download of information on upcoming Trek projects.
Speaking of plans for multiple upcoming animated projects Kurtzman explained that a series with Nickelodeon has just completed its first storyboard artwork. Meanwhile the previously announced Lower Decks has brought on board Rick & Morty’s Mike McMahan for writing duties.
Kurtzman also confirmed that there would be six more episodes of Short Treks, two of which would be animated with different styles and tones than either animated series. One will be from series director Olatunde Osunsanmi while the other will involve composer Michael Giacchino.
But that’s just the animated world. There’s a whole lot more going on in the world of live-action Star Trek.
Alongside the upcoming Picard series is the Section 31-focused show which will star Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou. That series is currently breaking its story broken by two of Discovery’s writers and is set to begin production as soon as its upcoming third season of that show has been completed.
Star Trek: Discovery is expected to return in early 2020. The animated shows are said to be “a year or two” off, according to Kurtzman, while Picard is coming before the end of 2019.

Star Trek: Picard is set to star Patrick Stewart, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd and Evan Evagora and will debut on CBS All Access sometime in the not-too-distant future.
