YOUNG JUSTICE S03E09 “Home Fires” review

    Synopsis

The Light hires an assassin to take out a member of the team, but who’s the target?

    Review

Despite the fact we are now only four episode away from the end of this first block of episode Young Justice is going oddly of peiste. That or it’s becoming overly convoluted.

We’re still circling the metahuman trafficking story which at the centre of this season. But with this episode The Light, the villains who have been omnipresent throughout the show come back to the fore.

They have a simple purpose in this episode: one, to bring in Lobo to kill Forager and two, to stop Ocean Master from murdering attendees at Iris West-Allen’s kids birthday party.

The episode offers up the opportunity for some fun DC Easter eggs. Lois brings a baby Jon Kent to the party, we see the Tornado Twins for the first time plus there are appearances by a number of other DC characters.

It’s this story which adds more of the light to this episode. As funny as Lobo is it’s seeing Roy confronted about his feelings for Artemis and exclaiming it’s tough being a dad in a room full of mums which really bring the laughs here.

Lobo is a great addition to the show. He’s as brutal as we could hope for in animated form. The fact he make sure to say the word “bastich” as often as possible also helps.

His fight sequence with Nightwing’s team is the highlight of the episode. For a split second I thought Forager had been offed only for him to reappear in his new, naked, gooey, pink form.

Lobo makes for a good distraction from everything else. But he’s little more than an obstacle of the week here. As a DC Comics fan it’s still great to see him though.

That’s the shortcoming of this episode though. It’s all great to watch but doesn’t amount to much more than a filler episode. But a good filler episode at that.

    Verdict

“Home Fires” is a very quirky episode of Young Justice. It shifts focus away from the Bat family to the wider DCU but also feels oddly stunted in telling its story.

    6/10

Young Justice stars Jesse McCartney, Nolan North, Stephanie Lemelin, Khary Payton, Zehra Fazal, Troy Baker and Jason Spisak. The series is directed by Christopher Berkeley and Mel Zwyer and producers by Sam Register, Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti.

The series premieres new episodes weekly via the DC Universe streaming service.
