Wreckreation is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

    Synopsis

Wreckreation hands you the keys to your very own driving and building open world! Explore 400 square kilometers of pure sandbox joy as you create, race and wreck alone or together with your friends.

    Review

Wreckreation is the shot of nitrous oxide that arcade racing fans, particularly those who grew up on the Burnout series, have been desperately waiting for. Developed by the veteran team at Three Fields Entertainment, reportedly a small team of just 10 incredibly talented people, this game is truly an adrenaline-fueled monster. It successfully inherits the high-octane spirit of legendary takedown racers while injecting a massive dose of creative freedom inspired by the likes of ‘Hot Wheels’. It delivers on speed, spectacle, and destruction like few modern racers can.

While the modern racing genre has branched into styles like the realism of Forza and Gran Turismo, or the heavy modification route of the Need for Speed Underground games, Wreckreation comfortably parks itself in the niche of the insane Arcade Racer. It has managed to resurrect the spirit that made the classic Burnout games so incredible back in the PS2 days—the incredible speeds, the near misses, and the thrill of taking your opponent out in glorious carnage.

The moment you hit the boost button in Wreckreation, the game’s soul comes to life. The physics are perfectly tuned for aggressive, consequence heavy driving, rewarding near misses, drifts, and, most satisfyingly, sending your opponents spinning into spectacular wrecks. This is classic, unfiltered arcade fun, delivered at a blistering 60+ FPS on the PS5. The sensation of power and speed is electric, and the tight race events—when you finally get into them—are exhilarating battles of boost management and calculated destruction. The chaos is polished, thrilling, and deeply reminiscent of the genre’s golden era.

You have a wide variety of cars to choose from based on your driving style—from fast and light sports cars to the heavy tanks that send enemies flying, or a mix of the two. Personalization is key, offering a wide array of options including paint colors, finishes, boost flames, glass colors, and wheels. You truly make your car your own.

Gameplay-wise, you have a total of 146 events to take part in. These vary in challenges from your classic racing and Road Rage (takedown your opponents in a time limit where your car also sustains damage) to Off-Road events, where you must travel from A to B hitting all checkpoints within a strict time frame. The game also features surprising appearances called Wreckoning, which grant a car upgrade upon completion, and Shutdown events, where you win a new car if you can keep up with and takedown a rival that spawns nearby. It’s a game that constantly rewards exploration and creative racing. Completing events adds points to your License, which unlocks new opportunities and serves as a bragging right for online players. Beyond events, there are hundreds of collectibles to hunt down, including billboards, red fences, jump ramps, and flaming hoops that unlock even more content.

Like with the classic Burnout series, you’ve got to take risks in the races to get ahead—there’s no time to play it safe. This high-stakes approach is what makes the game stand out from current modern racers; nothing quite tops hitting the boost at the final moment to shoot past your enemies and steal first place.

The customization extends to the overall gaming experience. Players can be the “Game DJ,” controlling traffic density, time of day, and even the weather with just a few clicks. This level of control ensures you have the game exactly the way you want it, restricted only by what you decide. The music choices are also well varied across the different radio stations; personally, setting the dial to the Punk station immediately echoed my Burnout roots and made me feel right at home.

Where Wreckreation truly carves its own lane is with the “MixWorld” creation tools. The ability to seamlessly drop massive, gravity-defying ramps, loops, and obstacles right into the 400 square kilometer map is revolutionary. It turns the entire open world into a sandbox, letting you live out those wild, childhood Hot Wheels fantasies. With over 400 individual pieces and objects that combine into over 1200 variations, the creative potential allows you to build stunning courses to test your own skills and challenge the greatest racers online.

However, the game’s reliance on its sprawling open-world map, “MixWorld,” becomes its main stumbling block and the reason it misses the fifth star. As someone who prefers to dive right into the action, having to drive to races scattered across the map, rather than selecting them from a simple menu, slows the pace significantly for me. While the exploration is fun initially, the constant need to navigate to the next event often breaks the pure, immediate flow that defined its spiritual predecessors. This open-world focus, though well-executed, feels like a detour from the pure racing chaos the game does so brilliantly. But I understand this can be a personal preference, and many will love exploring every space the game offers.

    Verdict

Wreckreation is a monumental success in bringing back genuine arcade racing aggression. Its mix of brutal speed and innovative track creation is fantastic, making it a must-buy for any racing enthusiast. While the open-world navigation occasionally feels like a speed bump for those wanting to just dive into a quick race, the sheer joy of the driving experience and the boundless potential of the creation tools make this 4-star wreck-fest an essential purchase.
