    Synopsis

As it crosses its 5th anniversary, the Slaughterverse unveils one of its darkest chapters yet in this oversized one-shot exploring a brand new facet to the mythos of monsters… and the ones who hunt them. Maxine Slaughter, a former pack hunter who renounced her White Mask to take up the Black for the Order of St. George, journeys to Europe to seek out House Cutter and their mysterious ways.
The Eisner Award-winning team of iconic writer James Tynion IV, legendary artist Werther Dell’Edera, and acclaimed colorist Miquel Muerto close out 5 years of nightmares with this pivotal entry in the blockbuster horror saga.

    Review

To celebrate 5 years of Something is Killing the Children, BOOM! Studios has released two new one-shot specials within the Slaughterverse. In this adventure, the exceptional team of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera continues to expand the stories and scope of this incredible world, delving further than ever before.

The Something is Killing the Children series burst onto the scene with its dark, gripping, and intense storytelling style 5 years ago. Since then, the creators behind this epic saga have pushed the story to new heights, resulting in various spin-off stories, like House of Slaughter, that have continued to deepen the lore and scope of this world, and the Book of Cutter is an excellent addition. In the Book of Cutter, the creative team, once again, takes characters we know and pushes them past our expectations, broadening the world along with it.

The story follows Maxine Slaughter, a White Mask sent to London to learn about the role of a Black Mask, a political initiative enforced by Cecilia. As the narrative progresses, the book alternates between Maxine’s experiences and historical texts, allowing us to understand more about the houses’ current state by drawing parallels between the past and the present.

The best part of this book is how it approaches the historical text, as the House of Cutter really sinks its claws into the history of this world, the houses, and the order, providing us with an origin-story-like insight. As the pages turn, We view ancient text, learning about the “great expansion”, which essentially describes the dawn of the House of Cutter and the House of Carnage, as well as the origins of the order. We learn where these houses are based (London, Mexico, Japan, France and beyond), which naturally expands the world from the American setting we are familiar with in the Something is Killing the Children series.

    Verdict

The House of Cutter brilliantly expands the lore of the Slaughterverse, skillfully intertwining Maxine Slaughter’s journey with rich historical context. It provides readers with a captivating and deeper understanding of the intricate world and its powerful factions. Overall, Book of Cutter is a compelling, unique, blend of history and character development that solidifies its place in the expanding universe of the Slaughterverse. Truly, it is a brilliant addition to the world and a testament to the team behind the series; it is a must-read for fans of the series.
