Review
BOOM! Studios have been investing heavily in the wider world of Something is Killing the Children, and it’s great to see. Fall of the House of Slaughter is the latest spin-off to expand that universe, and issue #2 continues to prove that there is plenty of story left to tell in this world.
With the original series (Something is Killing the Children) making Erica Slaughter a household name among comic readers, the natural next step is to flesh out the world around her. House of Slaughter, Book of Butcher, and Book of Cutter did a solid job of laying that groundwork, and Fall of the House of Slaughter picks up those threads and starts weaving them together with real purpose. The various moving parts of this world, the House itself, the Butchers, the Scarlets, the Order, are all in play here, and seeing them collide is genuinely satisfying.
At the centre of it all is a succession crisis. Old Dragon is on his deathbed, which means political manoeuvring is very much afoot as everyone scrambles for position. The setup is pure Game of Thrones meets The Godfather. Everyone is playing a game, everyone has an angle, and no one is particularly trustworthy. It makes for a compelling and propulsive read. Meanwhile, a massive media incident threatens to blow everything wide open, putting Cecilia’s neck firmly on the line. What I love is how the team responds: swooping in, deleting footage, burying articles, controlling the narrative before it can spiral. There’s a brilliant nod to social media and conspiracy culture here, too, because the harder they work to suppress the story, the wilder it gets. You can feel the tension building with every page, and it’s a lot of fun.
Cecilia, herself, continues to be a highlight. She is styled to perfection here, doing her very best Miranda Priestly impression, and it suits her brilliantly. If you are new to this world, now is genuinely the perfect time to jump in. The issue closes with a handy reading checklist pointing you towards the key volumes you need to get up to speed. That’s not just a nice touch, it’s a signal. A new era is coming, and this series is the on-ramp. Get caught up and get ready.
Verdict
A confident and compelling chapter that rewards longtime readers while rolling out the welcome mat for newcomers. Fall of the House of Slaughter is building towards something big, and issue #2 makes the wait feel very worthwhile. The Slaughterverse is in good hands.
