Review
It’s not the first time we’ve had DC crossover with other properties. Batman has crossed paths with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and not long ago, the DC world had to deal with the might of Godzilla. The last issue of DC x Sonic the Hedgehog showcased that this might be the best use of worlds interconnecting, and it’s simply due to the fact that there are many similarities between the characters in both worlds. We got sentimental moments between Batman and Shadow as they shared their trauma with one another. The Flash and Sonic continuously try to outrace one another, and it continues. Darkseid is after the Chaos Emerald, and this issue is so action-packed, you’ll be surprised that it isn’t the final issue of this crossover.
At the end of the last issue, they all ended up splitting up into teams. Batman and Shadow, The Flash and Sonic, Cyborg and Tails, Green Lantern and Silver, and finally, Wonder Woman and Amy. It’s all moving at a rapid pace, which not even The Flash or Sonic can keep up with, and the looming threat of Darkseid is just getting worse as he gets ahold of his first emerald. Ian Flynn is an accomplished writer that has proven that he’s the perfect person to get to write a Sonic story, but he also showcases here that he understands these DC characters, and while they are written to fit the lens of a Sonic world and for their audience also, they still don’t feel disconnected from the characters we all know and love.
The connections that Flynn delivers with the Sonic and DC characters are not only hilarious but also heartwarming, even during such a stressful time as a Darkseid invasion. The issue is at its best when Sonic and The Flash continue their bickering while facing Darkseid to see if they can outpace one another, blaming one another’s speed for why they’ve failed. It’s moments such as these that stay the highlight of this crossover. It’s always nice to have a well-written story with characters that also feel connected to it, and Ian Flynn delivers with that, but the main job for a crossover is ideally the interactions, and thankfully it all feels natural with DC X Sonic the Hedgehog.
We get to see other villains enter the fray, such as Steppenwolf and even Dr. Robotnik, who joins to help Sonic, as this is also his world at stake. It easily falls under tropes, and it can’t be helped, but it allows for the issue to go in directions that allow for the future of this series to possibly last as long as it was originally teased. With how fast the issue was moving, it was getting worrying how Flynn planned to keep the attention of his readers, but he proves with the final pages that it’s all for a reason, and we’re possibly going to see fresh new dynamics for the Sonic group of characters.
Adam Bryce Thomas’ art and Matt Herms’ colours really bring Sonic’s universe to life and provide some of the best designs of the Justice League that I’ve seen in recent years. Admittedly, they’re simplistic designs, but simple is sometimes better, and it feels nice for a change of pace instead of complicated suit designs.
Verdict
DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #2 clearly feels more like a Sonic comic than it does a DC comic with Ian Flynn’s writing, but he still manages to make these characters feel like the ones we love with interactions that are honestly laugh-out-loud. It’s fast-paced, action-packed and colourful, and depending on how the next few issues play out, we could be in for the best crossover that DC has been involved in yet.
