Review
Issue #65 of Harley Quinn lands at an interesting time, not only in Harley’s personal life, but in the DC universe at large. The issue wraps up a subplot that has been building for several issues now and pushes Harley in an exciting new direction.
If you have been keeping up with Harley, you will know that her breakup with Ivy caused her so much distress that she literally split into two versions of herself. One was a heightened, bubblegum-pink, bright version of everything you would expect from Harley; the other was Bat-Quinn, Harley’s best impression of the Caped Crusader. If you have not been keeping up, well, that is what you have been missing out on.
Both versions of Harley have been going through the motions across recent issues, and issue #65 brings this storyline to a head with an explosive conclusion. What has been particularly satisfying about this handful of issues is the sense that they have been building toward something. One of my criticisms of the series was that it felt a little directionless at times, but with a major event right around the corner, the purpose is now clear, and it is lovely to see it all clicking into place.
I have been covering Harley Quinn for Get Your Comic On for quite some time, reading from the very beginning, so I have seen this run at every stage. I was genuinely worried during the Gunbunny issues, which were not that long ago, that the comic had potentially run out of steam and story. These past few issues have well and truly squashed that doubt. While it is not perfect, the creative team are clearly trying everything to find new threads, new beats, and new elements to play with. Harley as a character can fall into the trap of feeling one-note, so I can appreciate the effort to find new depths and facets, even when they do not always land completely. It is still fun, and that counts for a lot.
Without spoiling, the final panels propel Harley headfirst into the upcoming Batman: Bad Seeds event. If you are out of the loop, Batman: Bad Seeds is a major ten-week comic book crossover event from DC Comics running from August through October 2026, overseen by Matt Fraction and G. Willow Wilson. The story unfolds across one long, dark night in which Gotham City’s mayor, Pamela Isley, triggers a massive eco-terror event that mutates Gotham into a primordial, prehistoric jungle.
Naturally, with Harley and Ivy’s breakup being so devastating, it is clear that it is going to have a significant effect on how events unfold. If you have not read this subplot, it would absolutely be worth picking up the past six or so issues, from the breakup to now, as they provide great context for where Harley is heading as we go into the event. I am sure you could enjoy Bad Seeds without them, but these issues add a layer of emotional context that is going to make the whole thing hit harder. And that, frankly, is part of the fun.
Verdict
Harley Quinn #65 delivers a fun and explosive conclusion to Harley’s split-personality storyline, while finally giving the series a stronger sense of direction. The recent issues have successfully rebuilt momentum, adding new emotional depth to Harley and setting up her role in Batman: Bad Seeds. Not every idea lands perfectly, but this is an entertaining payoff that leaves Harley in an exciting place for what comes next.
