Robert Downey Jr. is Doctor Doom. Don’t worry, we’re just as confused and stunned as you are. However, now that we’ve all had some time to process the events from Hall H, we decided to reach out to an expert to help illuminate what this means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To shine a light on the significance of Doctor Doom’s arrival to the MCU and Downey Jr.’s casting, we spoke to Dr. Mark Hibbett– the world’s only Doctor Doom PHD-holder. Yes, he has a doctorate in Doctor Doom. He’s a Doom doctor.
Together, we discussed the wider implications of Doctor Doom’s presence, as well as Dr. Mark Hibbett’s own research into the iconic villain. His insight into Victor von Doom really helped highlight some of the ways in which the MCU could introduce him, especially since Avengers: Doomsday is only two years away. There were also potential explanations that could explain why Downey Jr. was casted instead of another actor.
It was an incredibly fun and highly nerdy chat that we’re so proud of, and you can watch it all right now. Get involved. Let us know what you think. Are we onto something here? Or is there something much more sinister happening?

Dr. Hibbett is a member of University of the Arts London’s (UAL) Comics Research Hub, based at London College of Communication (LCC), and specialises in transmedia comics characters. He authored the book ‘Data and Doctor Doom: An Empirical Approach to Transmedia Characters’, published in 2024, and his work on the character has been presented at multiple international conferences. He is the only person in the world to hold a PhD in Doctor Doom.
