Well, we didn’t see this coming. The Russo Brothers are back to direct the next two Avengers movies, and it appears as though Kang has been completely dropped as the next big villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Doomsday will be released in May 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released the following year in 2027.
Now, Avengers: Doomsday is a brand new title, and as you’ll see… it actually confirms the arrival of a major Marvel Comics villain; Doctor Doom. But who will be playing said villain? There have been many many fancasts for Doom, but it appears as though Marvel will be doing something quite bold. Robert Downey Jr, literally Iron Man, will be rejoining the MCU as Victor Von Doom. It was an incredibly wild announcement that has truly baffled the world.
Check out the official announcement straight from Hall H:
What does this mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Honestly, we don’t know. With the multiverse and variants existing, we could be dealing with some sort of variant. An evil Iron Man, basically. Or we could simply be dealing with a brand new take on the iconic villain who is in no way related to Tony Stark. However, that feels very unlikely. There has to be a connection, otherwise they would have picked someone else, right?
Considering how integral Doom is to the Fantastic Four story, it’ll also be interesting to see how Doom appears or if he appears at all, remembering that Galactus is the big villain of the upcoming movie. Can they really juggle both Doom and Galactus simultaneously?
While this announcement was incredibly exciting for fans, it has left us perplexed with a thousand different questions… All of which have been left unanswered. What’s next for the Avengers? Only time will tell. What did you make of this reveal? Let us know in the comments and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more Avengers and Marvel news.
