Review
My Adventures with Superman is back! After an absolutely stunning first run of ten episodes the series returns this weekend with a two episode premiere which has the Man of Steel hitting the ground running. Not only that but the series is coming to both the US and UK almost simultaneously with UK fans able to watch new episodes on Channel 4 the morning after their Saturday premiere in the US.
It feels right to being season 2 with a two-episode premiere as both “More Things in Heaven and Earth” and “Adventures with My Girlfriend” feel like a two part story that helps re-acclimatise the audience to the anime-inspired Metropolis inhabited by Jack Quaid’s charming Clark Kent. It also makes sense that the series moves on in time following a brief piece of connective tissue with the season one finale. Picking up several months later, presumably after the upcoming My Adventures comic book, there has been plenty of developments to keep our core trio busy.
Clark’s relationship with Lois (Alice Lee) is getting serious, as are their jobs at The Daily Planet. Meanwhile Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) has landed himself a promotion as his Firebird video brand has been absorbed in to the Planet’s media conglomerate and he finds himself in charge or a rather rambunctious staff.
All of the developments allow the series to introduce new elements and new challenges to each of the characters. Taking them a step closer to their eventual destinies. That’s not to say that My Adventures is rushing to get to the finish line. There’s still plenty of growth to come for these characters. The creative team just isn’t interested in retreading the steps they already covered in season one. Pretty quickly the new season begins to introduce new characters which will be key to future storytelling. We already know from the trailers that Kara, aka Supergirl, will be making an appearance. But her presence is felt long before she is ever seen on screen. Likewise the threat posed by Amanda Waller (Debra Wilson) and Task Force X feels great and evermore pressing across these two episodes.
What continues to fascinate me about My Adventures is the spin it puts on classic lore to make it feel fresh for a contemporary audience. These two episodes deal with the hangover of Clark discovering his Kryptonian heritage in a way which allows for the introduction of Kara and the threat of invasion to remain. But without falling in to the trap of repeating previous stories or retreading old ground. With Kryptonian tech out in the world that could also pose some interesting issues for Clark moving forwards whilst also justifying how other characters coming in to the season may appear.
Verdict
A great return for My Adventures with Superman. These two episodes function as a great jumping off point, closing the book on season one and opening the door to a world of new opportunity for season two.
