Synopsis
Years before the foundational Archer’s Peak Saga, this second standalone story continues the formative look at Erica Slaughter’s early days before she became the hunter she is now!
When encountering a species of monster she’s unfamiliar with killing, what lessons will this young hunter learn as she faces a foe that could finally outwit her?
Review
Erica Slaughter, along with her signature hairstyle, razor-sharp wit and brutally hilarious commentary, shines brighter than ever in the latest issue of Something Is Killing The Children. This standalone chapter in the Slaughter-verse provides another glimpse into Erica Slaughter’s legacy as a renowned hunter of the supernatural, and it encompasses everything you’d want and expect from the Something Is Killing The Children universe: dark, twisted, and captivating, all woven into a gripping story that will completely engross you!
We find ourselves in a poorly managed supermarket, where two employees are deeply discussing their love lives–or lack thereof. Their conversation is abruptly interrupted when a wounded Erica and a child enter the supermarket in search of something. In true Something Is Killing The Children fashion, Erica’s arrival triggers a descent into chaos, and the unsuspecting individuals around her become entangled in, once again, a supernatural encounter.
This issue excels in delivering strong horror themes, with one scene in the darkness standing out as particularly memorable–reminiscent of the most effective jump scares in the horror genre. The tension is palpable, masterfully building with each panel.
Speaking of writing, one thing I’ve really come to appreciate about this series is the quality of its writing, especially when it comes to the secondary and tertiary characters. As a character, Erica is bursting with personality, but what truly makes her stand out are her interactions with those around her. She shines brightest when supported by a strong cast, and this issue serves as a perfect example of that statement. The characters surrounding her are charming and witty, creating a beautiful balance with Erica, and it’s a joy to read.
What I absolutely adore about these standalone issues is how they delve deeper into Erica’s backstory. Often, a “prequel” or “flashback” type of story might seem overdone, but that’s far from the case here. Each frame is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, truly enriching her character and adding depth to her narrative in a way that feels fresh and engaging.
Verdict
The latest instalment of the Something Is Killing The Children series delivers everything fans have come to anticipate and adore: a dark, twisted narrative that is utterly captivating, seamlessly crafted into a compelling story that promises to fully immerse and enthral you!
