EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME is now in cinemas and we hope you’ve had the chance to check it out on the big screen. Anime is gradually working its way into our theatrical lives with limited and infrequent showings. While they’re more spaced out, it does make them feel very special because they’re rarer. It’s almost like an event rather than a trip to the cinema. Whenever an anime does grace our screens… You know it’s for a good reason. As an Evangelion fan, I could only imagine what it would be like to witness the mind-bending animation and epic mech fights on the big screen. However, thanks to Anime Limited, many of us were granted that opportunity, and we leapt at it.
Filled with utterly mesmerising and truly unique visuals, Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time delivers in regards to scope and scale. It was made to be seen on the big screen. Now, while I absolutely praise this finale on a visual and emotional level, the story of Evangelion is quite the puzzle in of itself, and Thrice Upon a Time certainly didn’t help me understand everything that I wanted to. Having said that though, while the world of Evangelion is vast and quite spectacular, this final film, and indeed all of its predecessors, doesn’t get lost in the trap of world-building. Instead, it dives into the unravelling and brutal realities that Shinji and Rei face.
With the entire world at stake, this finale takes us on a journey of reconcilliation and personal discovery. Evas, Angels and Human Instrumentality may be some of the coolest and scariest elements and concepts in the franchise, but at its core… Evangelion is about the fragility and strength of the characters that have made this franchise, and this finale completely respects their incredibly messed up history and delivers a satisfying and deeply emotional end to their torment and devastation.
So, if you love Evangelion as much as we do, you definitely don’t want to miss out on this chance to see it in cinema.
