Now this one certainly made us chuckle.
If you’ve watched the Harley Quinn animated series then you’ll know the show likes to push boundaries. From killing off high profile characters to some incredibly dirty jokes, the series has gotten away with a lot over the course of two season.
But in a new interview with Variety about how the superhero genre is breaking the mould executive producer Justin Halpern touched on a moment that the higher ups at DC did not allow to make the cut.
“It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway,” said Halpern. “A perfect example of that is in this third season of Harley [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”
Both Halpern and producing partner Patrick Schumacker commented on how supportive DC has been. In past interviews both has made it clear that there are often times they can’t believe in what they have been allowed to include in the series.
Production is currently underway on a third season, the first to premiere as a HBO Max exclusive.
Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco as the voice of Harley, and she’ll be joined by Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, JB Smoove, Jason Alexander, Wanda Sykes, Giancarlo Esposito, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Diedrich Bader, Tony Hale and Chris Meloni.
