It seems like it has been a while since we heard about George R.R. Martin’s upcoming book, The Winds of Winter. The 6th novel in the epic A Song of Ice and Fire series has been in production since 2010 and is apparently meant to be massive.
The legendary author has even stated that the last two installments (The Winds of Winter & A Dream of Spring) could reach over 3000 manuscript pages between them. That’s insane. So the production of this book has been slow. However, Martin has been providing updates from the very start. In fact, Martin has released various chapter samples for fans to read.
These point-of-view chapters include some very well known and loved characters such as:
- Arya Stark as Mercy
- Sansa Stark as Alayne
- Tyrion
- Theon
- Barristan Selmy
- Victarion Greyjoy
- Aeron Greyjoy
- Arianne Martell
George R.R. Martin has finally given fans a new update regarding his upcoming projects, as well as his experience in isolation. He confirmed that he had finished quite a few chapters.
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go”
Despite saying there is a long time to go, the author is hopeful that next year will bring great things: The revival of his exciting and mysterious plans, an end to Covid-19, and… a completed version of The Winds of Winter.
“I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done”
Martin also decided to drop a slight tease into what he has been writing for The Winds of Winter and what is to come in the coming weeks. It seems as though he has a firm plan and is certainly on a roll.
“Of late I have been visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah. I will be dropping back into Braavos next week”
We can’t imagine what it is like to take on such a massive undertaking. Sure, it has been a while but wouldn’t you prefer a book that has passion, patience and care weaved into the words that hold it together? We certainly would. So we’re happy to wait… and we’re certain that it will be worth it.
George R.R. Martin built an entirely fictional world. A dangerous, cruel, yet occasionally beautiful world. Pulling that off requires time and a lot of care. However, even Martin admits that he wishes they would go quicker.
“I do wish they would go faster, of course. Way way back in 1999, when I was deep in the writing of A STORM OF SWORDS, I was averaging about 150 pages of manuscript a month. I fear I shall never recapture that pace again. Looking back, I am not sure how I did it then. A fever indeed.”
So there you have it. The Winds of Winter is on its way to completion. But there is still a lot of work to be done. Obviously you wouldn’t expect Martin to be cooped writing every single day. When he is not deep into Westeros, George has been spending his days reading and watching television.
