Thor: Ragnarok’s director and the voice of Korg, Taika Waititi looks ready to join the Fox/Disney animated project which will reboot Flash Gordon.
While the Metro have stated that Waititi has signed up to write and direct the reboot with John Davis producing, Deadline have reported that it is currently too early to identify what his role will be.
The reboot comes almost 40 years after the original movie was released back in 1980. For those who are unfamiliar with Flash Gordon, the classic film follows an American football player who is hit by a meteorite and then transported to the planet Mongo where he battles Ming the Merciless. The film is well known for its cheesy approach and its wonderful soundtrack by Queen.
Considering the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pushed this animated reboot into production sooner rather than later.
Back in 2015, Matthew Vaughn was previously announced as the director but in 2017 he dropped out due to competition concerns:
‘You’ve got Star Wars, you’ve got Guardians [of the Galaxy], so you’ve got to have your own space opera, but you have to find something that can survive among these two very, very great franchises.’
Previously, Waititi was working on the Bubbles movie which was also an animated feature that focused on the life of Michael Jackson through the eyes of his pet monkey, Bubbles. He walked away from the project due to his busy schedule and has since been working on Jojo Rabbit– a film about a young boy who is guided by his imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, who is being played by Waititi himself, after he discovers that his mother has been hiding a Jewish girl from the Nazi Army.
Taititi has also been confirmed to be directing the live action adaptation of the Akira with Leonardo DiCaprio co-producing.
