In its second weekend at the global box office, Thor: Love and Thunder has fended off some tough competition to maintain its place at the top of the pack. But despite closing in on $500M globally, the film has struggled to hold on to its audience.
The Marvel Studios release was looking at a potential 60-65% drop from its opening weekend of $144M in the domestic market. But with final estimations it would appear the film underperformed to the tune of a -68% drop and a $46M second weekend gross.
The second weekend drop ranks among the MCU’s worst, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (-67%), Black Widow (-68%) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (-68%).
Whether the steep drop is due to the B+ CinemaScore or poor word of mouth remains to be seen. All eyes will now be on how the film performs in its third weekend. But despite the disappointing weekend there is no escaping the film’ global dominance.
Its domestic total now sits at an estimated $233.2M, whilst international figures now clock in around $264.8M. That puts the Taika Waititi directed film somewhere around $498M globally and a guaranteed $500M by the end of Monday.
Of note, Love and Thunder is one of Marvel Studios’ only movies to score below an A grade CinemaScore. Audiences gave the film a disappointing B+, a grade only shared by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and 2011’s Thor. The only MCU movie to grade lower is Eternals which landed a B. On Rotten Tomatoes the film currently sits at 68% fresh putting it in the bottom 5 MCU titles, only slightly ahead of The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (66%).
Once again directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson and Christian Bale. The film will also see the return of the Guardians of the Galaxy including Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel.
