THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Debuts With Impressive $302M Global Box Office

There’s no escaping the God of Thunder right now, after a blisteringly hot weekend at the box office Thor: Love and Thunder is topping the charts with a huge $302M opening.

The Marvel Studios release began its global rollout in Australia on July 6 before hitting UK screens on July 7. The film went wide of Friday 8 with its US release and from there the dollars began rolling in.

On home turf the Taika Waititi film brought in $29M from Thursday previews which contributed to a $69.5M opening day. Saturday and Sunday were equally impressive with $42.1M and $31.M respectively. That puts the film at an estimated $143M for the weekend as a whole. Stacked against a $250M budget and around $100M in marketing that’s not a bad start for Chris Hemsworth’s fourth headline movie and 11th live-action outing in the role.

That $143M is the third largest of 2022, behind Multiverse of Madness ($187M) and Jurassic World Dominion ($145M). It’s also the largest opening for a solo Thor movie, topping previous outing Ragnarok by 16%.

Of note, Love and Thunder is one of Marvel Studios’ only movies to score below an A grade CinemaScore. Audiences gave the film a disappointing B+, a grade only shared by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and 2011’s Thor. The only MCU movie to grade lower is Eternals which landed a B. On Rotten Tomatoes the film currently sits at 68% fresh putting it in the bottom 5 MCU titles, only slightly ahead of The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (66%).

Internationally Love and Thunder performed ahead of expectations, bringing in an impressive $159M from 47 international markets. At $302M globally, the film scores the 11th best MCU debut of all time globally.

Korea leads the international markets with $15.3M, followed by the us here in the UK with $14.8M. Following on from us Brits is Australia ($13.8M), Mexico ($11.8M) and India ($10.3M).

Once again directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson and Christian Bale. The film will also see the return of the Guardians of the Galaxy including Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel.

Catch Thor: Love and Thunder in cinemas globally now.
