Taika Waititi‘s to do list is ever growing. The director is still down to direct a Star Wars project, an Akira live-action adaptation, as well as a brand new Flash Gordon movie. According to a report via Variety, Waititi is now in negotiations to direct Klara and the Sun, based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel, for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
As of right now, the project is in development with Dahvi Waller penning the screenplay and David Heyman producing the film for Heyday Films. Garrett Basch and Waititi are looking to produce with author Ishiguro serving as an Executive Producer.
The novel tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change for ever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.
Klara and the Sun is an absolutely outstanding book. If you haven’t read it, we highly recommend checking it out. It is simply superb. The history of literary adaptations has been shaky, so it’ll be interesting to see how this story of love and Artificial Intelligence is brought to life.
