Regardless of your opinion on The Battle of Winterfell this week Game of Thrones shattered its own ratings records with 17.8M viewers. If you happened to be on social media on Monday (or Tuesday) you’ll have noticed that everyone had an opinion on the battle seen in “The Long Night”.
Wired sat down with Game of Thrones cinematographer Fabian Wagner and discussed the episode and how our TVs may have been to blame for issues.
“A lot of the problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly,” Wagner explained “A lot of people also unfortunately watch it on small iPads, which in no way can do justice to a show like that anyway.”
“Everything we wanted people to see is there Personally I don’t have to always see what’s going on because it’s more about the emotional impact,” he added.
Wagner also touched on the environment in which you watched the episode and how that may have had an impact. “Game of Thrones is a cinematic show and therefore you have to watch it like you’re at a cinema: in a darkened room. If you watch a night scene in a brightly-lit room then that won’t help you see the image properly.”
Concluding his interview Wagner exclaimed “I know it wasn’t too dark because I shot it.”
Did you find “The Long Night” to be too muddy? Or was your TV properly tuned in to get a clearer picture of the battle?
Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. The series airs on HBO in North America and Sky Atlantic here in the UK.
